One of our regular guests posted a picture of her wisteria on her FB page and for a moment I thought it was ours at Polgwedhen - they looked so similar. I said that I would post a picture of ours. This is for you, Di.

We took this great photo of St. Michael's Mount one evening this week. Just look at the colour of the water!

Edward The Confessor gifted the island Mount to the Benedictine Order of monks in the 11th. century, it was later purchased by the St. Aubyn family in 1659, who continue to live there in partnership with the National Trust. There is lots more history than this, so it is well worth a visit.

At low tide you can walk across the causeway and at high tide there are boats which will ferry you there and back.

As well as the Mount itself, there is a community of some 30 people, who work in various rôles on the island . There are lovely gardens, shops, café as well as the castle to visit. The views are to die for!

Some say St. Michael's Mount is the jewel in the crown of all the Cornish attractions - I would agree with them.

Places to Visit from Polgwedhen Lodge

The Lizard Point and Poldhu

Last Monday 27th April, I went for a drive to The Lizard Point and nearby Poldhu Cove, just for the views and ice cream !

The Lizard is the most southerly point in Great Britain. In the first picture you can see the old lifeboat station, now relocated to Kilcobben Cove, and home of the lifeboat 'Irene Muriel Reece'. At Lizard village there are many shops selling serpentine rock and shell craft items. Serpentine rock is special to this area. The ice cream is good too!

The bottom picture on the right is nearby Poldhu Cove. There is a large car park and not much else - just a beach café with outside seating, where sometimes in summer there is is low-key live music. Poldhu is close to Pollurian Cove and to Mullion, a village with another lovely cove.

The whole area is beautiful and easily accessible from Polgwedhen Lodge

IT'S TREVITHICK DAY THIS SATURDAY IN CAMBORNE

An annual event celebrating the life of steam engineer Richard Trevithick, who developed the first high pressure steam locomotive.

A son of Camborne, Trevithick showcased his steam engine with its inaugural drive up Camborne Hill on Christmas Eve 1801, and the engine has has since been immortalised in the song "Going Up Camborne Hill, Coming Down".

Trevithick's first engine was called "The Puffing Devil". Locally it revolutionised mining, and nationally it drove forward the industrial revolution.

Every steam engine across the world is a descendent of Trevithick's engine.

Highlights of Trevithick Day include:
A procession of steam engines, vintage vehicles, brass bands and other live music, dancing (including local school children), markets, fairground rides, street food.

Very colourful and lots of fun, the event attracts huge crowds.

TREGOTHNAN, COUNTRY SEAT OF LORD FALMOUTH, OPENED ITS MAGNIFICENT GARDENS TO THE PUPLIC LAST WEEKEND....... this happens only once a year and proceeds are donated to local charities

Some interesting facts about Tregothnan

* In 8 years time there will have been Boscowans (the family name of the Lords Falmouth) at Tregothnan for 800 years. In 1334, John de Boscowan Ros of St Buryan married Johan de Tregothnan, and their descendants still live there today.
* 'Tregothnan' translates from Cornish to 'The house at the head of the valley'.
* In 1811, landscape designer Humphrey Repton produced plans for rebuilding the house and landscaping the grounds.
* Following the death of Repton, in 1818, William Wilkins took over the work in the 1820s. His other work includes the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square and improvements to Kings College, Cambridge.
* The gardens feature the UK's tallest rhododendron and the UK's widest rhododendron.
* A prized specimen of the Wollemi pine - a prehistoric species thought to be extinct until 1994 - grows in the garden.
* The camellia maze is the largest in the world.
* The first UK tea plantation was planted at Tregothnan in 1999 and at over 26 miles of tea rows, it is the largest in Europe.
* There are 90 beehives, and manuka honey has been produced at Tregothnan since the 19th century.

Well worth a visit next year!
