When it's good it's.....

The North Coast is world class paddling, so much to see and explore, different in different tides and as this paddle demonstrated conditions change in an instant.

A picnic spot with a view, seals, clear waters, caves, mine workings, far reaching views, arches and so much to make you leave you in awe. This was a couple of weeks ago, lucky us.

Alas Mother Nature in her wisdom doesn't allow us to decide when we can paddle on the North Coast.

A bit of an epic paddle at Porthcurno. We ended up turning back after 40 mins with the wind worse than the forecast and the the swell was also slightly worse than forecast. The swell was also pretty 'setty.' We flew back in 15 mins which showed the level of effort.

Either condition on it's own would have been OK, but the swell kept us from using the cliffs as shelter, so we were constantly being pushed off. It also meant that there weren't reliable sheltered rest spots.

We discussed what could happen an hour later, when everyone is more tired. Everyone was happy with the discussion which ultimately fell to me.

Some really great lessons about dynamic risk assessment, thinking ahead, understanding how these conditions would translate to the whole journey, factors combining, managing disappointment.

Also in this warm weather the sea looks so inviting, don't be lulled!

We all left the water smiling, with time to take pics in the sheltered landing spot and enjoyed a picnic on the beach.

Van back from the garage, a couple of hours to kill, what to do?

I think I missed the really flat conditions and couldn't chance the caves. Epic views near and far.
