✈️🌿 BIG NEWS FOR TRAVEL TO COSTA RICA! 🇨🇷

Having flown indirect to San Jose last week, this is such good news!!

British Airways is making it easier than ever to fly from the UK to Costa Rica, with its NEW London Heathrow–San José direct service from 25 October 2026 and we cannot contain our excitement!!

Here’s what you need to know:

📍 Route: London Heathrow (LHR) – San José, Costa Rica (SJO) (replacing the current LGW service)
🗓️ Year-round service: Flights will operate all year round rather than seasonally.
🛫 Aircraft: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

Day 6 - The day we’ve all been waiting for!

Today we were all up bright and early ready for our trip into the Manuel Antonio National Park. 5% of the world’s biodiversity can be found in Costa Rica, and 2% of that can be find in this small national park on the Pacific West coast!

One benefit to travelling in the ‘wet’ season, is that tourist numbers are low and so the trail through the park was pretty quiet. The weather gods were also looking down on us once again and we were blessed with glorious sunshine! It’s mandatory to have a guide through the park, and ours was so informative. I’ve really loved hearing how proud our local guides have been of their country, and how keen they are to educate others about it.

Within minutes we saw Squirrel monkeys, a Toucan, a Sloth, many butterflies…you get the idea!

A little further and we witnessed a pair of Howler monkeys relaxing together in the trees, and a long-nosed Koati just wandered by. A glimpse of some cheeky white-faced capuchin monkeys was the last we had before the rail opened out onto the most spectacular beach 😍 We had half an hour here for a swim and to just relax and take in this special place.

The walk back to our bus bought another sloth (2-toed this time), crabs, caterpillars and more iguanas than I could count!

The afternoon was then ours to relax at the hotel - bliss! I had planned to walk the monkey trail that sits in the hotel grounds in the later afternoon… but our luck with the weather finally ran out and unfortunately it was safer to stay at the pool bar 🤪





Our last evening in Costa Rica 🥲 I don’t want to think about the trip home, but I know I’ll be back 🙌

Day 5 - Transfer day to Manual Antonio

Having completed our training academy, it was time to say goodbye to Arenal. This was bitter sweet for me as it is such an incredible destination, and there was so much I still wanted to do…but off we were going to Manuel Antonio on the western Pacific coast!

Whilst the country isn’t huge, the mountain ranges mean that what looks like a relatively short journey on the map was actually going to be around 6hrs by car. So we broke our journey at the river Tarcoles and went in search of some crocodiles! American and cayman crocodiles can be found in the river, with the 3rd highest concentration of crocs in the world.

The bird life was pretty special there too; we spotted Wood Storks, Great Egrets, Back Necked Stilts, Sandpipers, a White Ibis and many more!

We were lucky to see one of the oldest crocs in the river, Mike Tyson, who was approximately 90 years old! His much younger girlfriend Shakira was also in residence.

Back on the bus, we were on the home stretch to our final destination of Manuel Antonio. On the way I saw 4 Scarlet Macaws in flight, which was a bucket list tick for me 🦜

After checking into our hotel and admiring the sunset, we had a hour to relax before dinner at a local hotel. The town has a great feel, with lots of local bars and restaurants.

The next day we were heading into the National park itself and we were all so excited!

Day 4 - Sloths, information, storms, party!

There is only really one word to sum up our morning yesterday….Sloth! Our hunt for this iconic Costa Rican animal finally proved successful and we spent a fabulous 30 minutes just watching her (we think) in the tree. It’s easy to see why they are the poster animal for this country so full of amazing wildlife…unlike any other animal I’ve seen before and just so adorable!

We left Ms Sloth wondering where all her fans were going, and headed into our last academy day of learning. There was a lot of information to take on board once more, but I now have a full book of hints, tips, logistics, suggestions about travelling in Central and South America - my new bible as a Latin American specialist!

The afternoon brought more opportunities to learn from various suppliers about their hotels and experiences they offer in the region too. I didn’t know that I wanted to stay in a beautiful tree house that you can white water raft to access (in and out!) - but I do now! Be sure to ask me about this!!

Then…the most EPIC thunderstorm! We walked back in the torrential rain just in awe at the power of the rain and lightening ⚡️

The theme of the evening was Tropical 🌴🍍🦜🌺🍹
We were whisked off to a surprise location for a fabulous dinner, drinks and dancing.
Turns out when you party with Latin Americans, they really know how to dance! Our enthusiasm made up for any (much) lack of talent and we all had a wonderful time 💃💃💃

So…now the training part of our trip has come to an end, we’re heading to a new location for our final 2 days. Expect plenty of wildlife, beaches, spectacular scenery and maybe not so many photos of volcanoes 🌋

Day 3 - First full day in Costa Rica!

The time difference (-7hrs from UK) meant that by 5am I was up and enjoying a cup of tea on my terrace! I’m so glad I was though…the sights and sounds of the jungle at that time were just amazing. Humming birds everywhere, the sunrise light on the Arenal volcano…just stunning. We might be here in the wet season, but it’s the time of year that you are most likely to be able to get a clear view of the volcano - and we did! More often than not, the top is shrouded in cloud (we have also seen this!). Apparently locals believe that when the volcano has been visible several days in a row, it nan’s big rains are coming!

We have had some rain, but the showers are short and sharp, as you’d expect in the rainforest. It’s lovely and warm; the humidity is very high!

Today was all about learning. Bettering our knowledge of the fabulous countries taker make up Central and South America. It is so informative to learn about how we can visit these countries and get the absolutely most out of the experience. Peru has gone straight to the top of my bucket list…followed by Chile, Bolivia, Colombia…you the idea 😂

I still found time to sneak out for a quick Sloth hunt…he’s proving rather elusive but I’m very determined to try again tomorrow. We did have a croc join us for breakfast!

The afternoon was for meeting some fabulous suppliers of experiences and properties across the regions too. It’s always so lovely to connect personally with people who are so passionate about their homelands.

After a full on day of information processing…our reward? Dinner and a trip to some local hot springs. The water was amazing and I’m sure we will all look 10 years younger now 😂

Day 1 & 2 - Latin Routes Academy Costa Rica 2026

I meet up with my travel buddies at London Heathrow on Sunday evening, all ready for our first flight to Bogotá, Colombia.

The 11hr, overnight flight passed surprisingly quickly (great film selection Avianca!) and then we had several hours to kill in Bogotá airport. We saw the most beautiful sunrise!

A delay on the runway meant that we landed an hour late at San Jose, Costa Rica. The views as we came into land were spectacular and helped to stave off the tiredness for a bit longer!

A misplaced bag added a bit more time to our wait at the airport, but we were then on our way to our final destination, La Fortuna and Hotel Manoa Arenal! I took the opportunity to grab an empanada en route when we had a quick stop. The scenery on the 4 hour drive was stunning! The roads are good quality, and although there are some narrow areas, self-drive is very much doable here.

After 30+hrs travelling, the sight of the Arenal volcano has never been more welcome! We had arrived!

A delicious welcome drink and cold flanked at check in, and we were straight off to our rooms to have a shower. Next stop (via Happy Hour): Hot Springs!

Relaxing with a Pina colada in one of the 8 hot spring pools was just what we all needed.

Later, drinks and pizza and time for everyone to get an early night 😴
