From centuries-old monasteries and mountain trails to daily rituals shaped by Buddhist tradition, Bhutan is a country where culture and landscape are deeply intertwined. Knowing what to do (and how to do it respectfully) makes all the difference.

We’ve rounded up some of the most meaningful experiences in Bhutan, from iconic highlights to quieter moments that offer real insight into life in the Himalayas.

When our team travels, the purpose is to observe how places actually work. Time on the ground is not a familiarisation exercise or a perk, it is essential research that ensures routes, timings and local partnerships function as they should, and it all feeds back into how our itineraries are shaped.

Emma’s recent trip to Algeria offered valuable insight into pacing, regional contrasts and how travellers experience the shifts between landscapes and cultures.

Emma said: “Joining our group tour in Algeria was invaluable. Travelling alongside our guests gave me a real understanding of what they enjoyed most and how the guide and overall travel style truly engaged them. For example, even the longer driving days were welcomed, as guests genuinely appreciated the constantly changing scenery and landscapes along the route.”

This is how research turns into real journeys.

Brazil is often approached through a narrow lens, despite its scale and diversity.

In this guide to Brazil, we look beyond the familiar entry points to Brazil, focusing instead on regions shaped by geography, history and daily life far from the main tourist routes. From vast wetlands and inland landscapes to preserved colonial towns, the emphasis is on understanding how different parts of the country function and connect.

It is for travellers who prefer exploration over highlights and who value context as much as place. It reflects our approach to travel design, balancing well-known sites with lesser-visited regions across Latin America.

While many travellers associate the Naadam Festival with the capital, this journey is designed to experience it away from the crowds. By travelling into the countryside, the focus shifts from spectacle to participation, sharing the festival alongside local communities rather than observing it at scale.

The route combines time in Ulaan Baatar with landscapes of the Gobi, from the Khongor sand dunes to the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, before reaching a regional Naadam celebration near Arvaikheer. The journey ends in Hustai National Park, home to the Takhi, the world’s only truly wild horses.

Unlike standard cultural tours, festival departures follow a fixed rhythm set by local events and regional movement. They suit travellers who value context, patience and being present for how traditions are lived, not just displayed.

In Algeria, women-only travel allows for deeper cultural access. On our journeys, travellers take part in experiences that are rarely available otherwise, from wearing the traditional El Haïk, to visiting a local hammam, to preparing Mhadjeb, one of Algeria’s most loved street foods, alongside local women.

These moments are not add-ons. They are integral to understanding everyday life and are made possible through travelling as a group of women, supported by experienced local guides and a thoughtfully structured itinerary.

Spontaneous trips don’t have to mean compromise.

With the right approach, a last-minute booking can still deliver a well-planned, enriching experience.

Here are a few expert tips we often share with travellers:

• Look for guaranteed departures to avoid uncertainty
• Choose a guided itinerary to maximise time and local insight
• Stay open to new or unexpected destinations
• Prioritise places that shine in the current season
• Embrace a little flexibility it often unlocks the best options
• Book with an ABTA-registered agent or tour operator for peace of mind

At Undiscovered Destinations many of our small-group journeys are designed to work beautifully even when booked close to departure — without sacrificing depth, expertise or experience.

Emma recently travelled through Algeria on our Desert and History itinerary, documenting the journey as it unfolded.

Emma has shared her reflections and photographs in a new blog post, offering a first-hand account of the journey.

Her route moved between historic cities and vast desert landscapes, tracing layers of history alongside daily life. Rather than a highlights list, her blog focuses on what it was like to experience Algeria over time, how places connected, and how the pace of travel shaped her understanding of the country.

There is one departure left this spring for travellers interested in exploring the Caucasus in depth.

Our Caucasus Discovery journey begins on 30 May, travelling through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia. The route brings together contrasting landscapes, layered histories and everyday life across three neighbouring countries, with time in capitals, rural regions and UNESCO-listed sites.

This is a small-group journey designed for travellers who value context, local insight and a well-paced itinerary.

Colombia is often introduced through a single story. What Mark experienced was something far more layered.

Travelling through coffee-growing landscapes, cacao regions and along the Caribbean coast, his understanding of Colombia shifted day by day. Conversations replaced assumptions. Geography explained history. Food, climate and local routines revealed how diverse the country really is.

In his latest blog post, Mark reflects on how these regions connect, and why seeing Colombia slowly and in context matters more than ticking off highlights. It is a perspective shaped by time on the ground, not preconceptions.
