This flight-free journey offers a thoughtful way to explore Albania and the Balkans, travelling by train from London and crossing the Adriatic by overnight ferry.

The route passes through France and Italy, with time in Matera before sailing from Bari to Albania. In Gjirokastra, cobbled streets wind through a UNESCO-listed old town, while Tirana offers a more contemporary perspective, including a visit to an art museum set inside a former Cold War bunker.

Further north, Kotor sits quietly on a sheltered bay beneath steep mountain peaks. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the journey takes in Mostar’s historic bridge and a guided visit to Sarajevo, where recent history remains very present.

This is a rewarding way to experience the Balkans without flying, with the journey itself very much part of the experience.
