Christmas or Hogmanay means bringing the whole family together. Why not do it in the most spectacular place? Luxurious bedrooms sleeping 10 in total, two lounges (one for the adults, the other for the kids), two kitchens including that much needed second oven for all the trimmings, a table for everyone and a walk across Uig Sands on Boxing Day. Where do you look for house inspiration?

When planning the house, I bought piles of magazines , but also for insp of what would work in a Hebridean climate.

I took so many photos of pages (and yes, sometimes largely because a beautiful dog was featured). This is just a tiny selection of my snaps.

And after a while, it was clear the same brands kept cropping up. for lights switches and sockets, for bathroom hardware, for everything really, for furniture, for couches for stoves. Other things took time - I still have about 50 samples of tiles from various companies, before settling with .

After the mountain of rock made the pad for the house, strip founds were dug and filled with concrete, and then dwarf walls were built - they had to be perfectly aligned to match the Scotframe manufactured structure which had been constructed in Elgin to GRAS’s design.

We were told we had picked exactly the worst time to build a house thanks to everything from Covid to that tanker running aground in the Suez causing prices to spike…

Here’s is the model of our house, long before a single bit of ground was touched - build by Jan Hájek and Gunnar Groves-Raines of .

We didn’t share many photos throughout the build process, so I thought I might do a trip down memory lane over the coming months - partly about the build but also the materials, suppliers and interiors as we get asked a lot of questions.

It will involve the tale of how we ended up with six bath tubs on site, and also how many broken sinks arrived (answer - three).
