Cairnhill Lodge enjoys a stunning setting on the southern fringes of the Cairngorms National Park. It is surrounded by forest, moors and lochs, which quickly give

way to high mountains to the north. The lodge is generously proportioned for four people with decor that is Scottish-Alpine in character: being both modern and homely. It is the perfect location for outdoor pursuits, connecting with nature, or simply chilling out and letting everyday stresses melt away. Your home from home

Cairnhill Lodge has space to accommodate a couple, a group of friends, or a family in cosy luxury. The main door leads into a spacious utility room equipped with washing machine, central heating boiler and drying facilities. From here you enter the sizeable, well-appointed open-plan kitchen and living area where you can enjoy a sociable meal at the dining table and then relax for the evening by the cosy burning stove. A separate office, complete with study desk and chair, is well-stocked with books, board games and DVDs, and is an ideal space for planning your next day’s activities. Each of the two substantial bedrooms, one with a kingsize bed and the other with twin beds, has a large wardrobe and dressing table. The bathroom is impressively sized and has both a bath and separate double shower. The lodge contains some novel artwork and has good WiFi connection throughout. Outside, there is a private eating area with access to a Weber gas BBQ – complete with an oak whisky barrel lid to keep out the weather. In addition, the decked area at the front has a patio suite and in-built lighting to give a relaxing ambiance for evening alfresco dining. A large secure storage shed is also provided for your use to store bikes, skies, golf clubs and even SUPs. Private parking for several vehicles is available adjacent to the lodge. Ideal for outdoor adventurers and for relaxing in luxurious comfort

Although it may be hard to leave the lodge, the surrounding area of Glenisla is idyllic and offers a wide range of leisure opportunities. There are numerous forest trails in the area for biking and walking, and if you are feeling adventurous there is the Cateran Trail – a 64-mile circular long distance walking route through Perthshire and the Angus Glens. The Glenshee to Alyth section of the trail passes right by the lodge. Hillwalkers can access a clutch of six Munros (Scottish mountains over 3000ft) directly from the upper reaches of Glenisla, with others located in neighbouring Glens. If wild swimming is your passion, then our guests tell us that Loch Shandra (3/4 miles from the lodge) is simply perfect. In winter, there is skiing at Glenshee Ski Centre, which is only a 30-minute drive from the lodge (19 miles). For golfers, there are two courses at Alyth Golf Club (10 miles), two courses at Strathmore Golf Centre (12 miles) as well as the championship Rosemount Links course in Blairgowrie (17.5 miles). A wide range of field sports, including clay pigeon shooting, archery and falconry, is available at Auchterhouse Country Sports (19 miles). There is local fishing at Loch Shandra and Lintrathen and additionally on the rivers Ericht, Isla and Tay, together with the North and South Esk – fishing permits are required and can be arranged locally. Glenisla is a wildlife haven with a huge diversity of species that call it home: including many garden birds, red and roe deer, pine martens, hedgehogs and red squirrels. You may even be lucky enough to see the elusive and exceptionally rare Scottish Wildcat, which is known to roam in the area! Keep your camera at the ready to snap that “award-winning” nature photograph. You won’t have to venture far as we have a band of red squirrels, hedgehogs and garden birds that come to our numerous feeding stations. Instead of outdoor pursuits, you may wish to spend a day or two sightseeing by enjoying and exploring the many spectacular castles and fascinating distilleries within easy reach of Glenisla. Shops, banks and associated services can be found in Alyth (10 miles) with further shopping in Kirriemuir (13 miles). More extensive services are found in Blairgowrie while the cities of Perth and Dundee can be easily reached in under an hour drive. The latter is home to the new V&A Design Museum and Captain Scott’s polar expedition ship RRS Discovery. Things to note

Bed linen, towels, heating, electricity and WiFi are included. Due to the lodge being low allergy accommodation we do not accept pets. An outside hand sanitiser is located beside the main door for your use. The lodge is located in a very peaceful area and we therefore do not accept bookings for stag or hen parties. Smoking or vaping is prohibited on the premises. About your hosts

We, Elaine and Cameron, arrived in Glenisla in 2017 and instantly fell in love with the stunning scenery, the fantastic outdoor pursuits on our doorstep and the amazing wildlife that are daily visitors to the lodge garden. Some of the wildlife in the garden has even featured on BBC Landward! Our mission is to provide you with an unforgettable holiday experience – a holiday where great memories are made. During your stay, should you require any assistance, help will be on hand. Advice can be given on walking or cycling routes nearby or further afield, fishing permits, ski hire/passes, likely wildlife encounters, sightseeing interests (castles, museums, distilleries), local cafés and restaurants and other pursuits (golf, shooting, horse riding). Whether it is exploring the stunning Angus Glens, relaxing in front of a roaring log fire, or experiencing a dramatic star-filled sky with a glass of wine in hand, you will find Cairnhill Lodge the perfect highland retreat that ensures you have a truly memorable stay.

I was born to do this ...

Some pet lambs broke free from the nearby farm and were feasting in a neighbours garden. Jura to the rescue! Safely escorted back to the safety of the farm.

Jura can add "sheep wrangling" to his Lost Dog Tracking credentials. Go Jura Go.

The flower boxes at Cairnhill Lodge have been stunning this summer. We even won 1st prize in the “window box” category and Best Exhibit for flowers at the Glenisla Produce Show on Saturday. We also picked some flowers from the Lodge garden and came in 2nd for the “vase of mixed flowers” category. Really chuffed!

End of day image 18 January 2024

Four happy, tired skiers from Aberdeen who managed to have a day away from Uni to join us.

Wall to wall blue sky in the morning and up till mid afternoon, another great day to be out on the hill 😎We finished the day with some heavy snow showers and a moderate wind at road level. This was much stronger on the ridges, making it bitterly cold. Snow was soft on a firm base, with some icy patches, and until the wind picked up and snow came on, visibility was excellent. Cairnwell racetrack was again skiing very well and there was some good off piste still to be had, on the bits of the hill which were missed yesterday.

Forecasting for heavy snow showers until 7pm and them more snow later tonight through the wee small hours.

The snow showers should continue through most of the day, so hopefully, fingers crossed🤞 we will see it falling in the right places and get enough to move out of the first valley (we're as keen as you are 🙂).

We'll post an update in the morning, and with snow falling, it's best to check the snowgate cameras to see if the road is open or closed, we'll let you know as soon as we hear from the snow ploughs.

Glenshee Ski Centre is only 30 min drive from Cairnhill Lodge. Fantastic facilities for all levels of snow sport experience. And with the recent and sustained alpine weather here it has made for some great skiing. Even into the evening!
