Starting at Wray Castle overlooking Windermere or at Loanthwaite near the village of Hawkshead, this route takes you through a picture postcard Lakeland valley. From Wray Castle, you’ll pass Blelham Tarn where you’ll see plenty of wildlife or at the Hawkshead end you'll see traditional Lakeland livestock as you pass through stone built farms. Remember to take a moment to look up, so you don’t miss the peaks of the Coniston, Langdale and Helvellyn ranges.
Wray Castle is a stunning estate looked after by the National Trust. While the castle itself is closed in 2025 due to refurbishment, the grounds, cafe and toilet facilities remain open to the public.
Take a walk in the grounds at Wray and discover some of the features of this great estate, still much as they were when they were built, including an arboretum and yew walk, walled garden, boathouse, and miniature harbour.
Although not open in 2025 due to refurbishment, you can still find out more about this fascinating place on the twice daily castle and grounds 'walk and talk'.
The castle grounds and the walk could be a great addition to your trip next time you stay at Elm Lodge!
