Bishops of the Anglican Church of Tanzania and their spouses are gathering in Biharamulo from 24–28 August for a five-day retreat focused on leadership, discipleship, Anglican identity and community engagement.

The retreat takes place during a period of significant growth for the Church, with three new dioceses being created in Tanzania in 2026.

The Most Revd Maimbo Mndolwa, Archbishop of Tanzania, said: “The upcoming retreat for bishops and their wives will be very crucial because it will enable bishops to spend time in prayer and reflection. It will equally strengthen our spiritual leadership and equip us with practical skills to manage challenges.”

The Rt Revd Dr Jo Wells, Deputy Secretary General of the Anglican Communion and Bishop for Episcopal Ministry, said: “My prayer is that the retreat will be a valuable opportunity for deep sharing, deep learning and for drinking in God’s love and goodness.”

The Most Revd Eraste Bigirimana has been installed as the sixth Archbishop and Primate of the Anglican Church of Burundi, during a service on August 23 at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Bujumbura.

The Archbishop of Canterbury (the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally) preached at the service. The Deputy Secretary General of the Anglican Communion (the Rt Revd Dr Jo Wells) and the Chair of the Anglican Consultative Council (Canon Maggie Swinson) were also present, along with bishops and representatives from DRC, Tanzania and Uganda.

Archbishop Eraste succeeds the Most Revd Sixbert Macumi, who has led the Anglican Church of Burundi since 2021.

During the installation, Archbishop Eraste pledged:

'In the ministry entrusted to me by God, I will seek to be a good example to the flock of Christ. I will endeavour to fulfil these responsibilities with the help of God.'

The Revd Domnic Misolo, an Anglican priest from Kenya and gender equality advocate, is set to join the Gender Working Group of the Multi-Faith Advisory Council.

The group brings together faith voices working to empower women and girls, challenge patriarchal norms and advance gender equality. It supports the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on Religion and Sustainable Development.

As founding director of the Institute for Faith and Gender Empowerment, the Domnic works with men and faith actors to promote biblical equality and positive masculinity and to prevent domestic abuse and gender-based violence.

He said: ‘By fostering dialogue and mutual respect, faith actors can help uplift gender equality as a shared moral responsibility.’

For over 170 years, the Mission to Seafarers has been ministering to men and women on seagoing ships around the world.

The Revd John Attenborough is the Regional Director for Mission to Seafarers in the Middle East and South Asia (MESA). He’s also Chaplain to the Cyprus Ports and Associate Priest at St Barnabas Church in the diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf.

He spoke to Anglican News about directing a mission team in war-torn regions and his experiences over more than thirty years with the Mission to Seafarers.

From 10–12 August, Primates and Provincial Secretaries from across the Americas met for a historic first-of-its-kind meeting, hosted in the diocese of São Paulo, the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil (IEAB).

Joined by the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, the Primates gathered for prayer, conversation and shared discernment about ministry and matters across their Provinces.

In their joint letter issued at the conclusion of the meeting, the Primates acknowledged how their diverse provinces are 'shaped by forces that call us to action, including colonialism, secularism, polarisation, migration concerns, economic and social insecurity, corruption and climate change'.

They pledge 'to work together with mutual accountability and hope for the people of our provinces. We leave this gathering with the conviction that we have begun a new chapter in our life together in Christ.'

Following the meeting, several of the Primates and Provincial Secretaries will participate in a broader regional gathering with other leaders organised by the Anglican Alliance to explore a listening process for reimagining power called 'A Place At the Table'.

The meeting reflects the significance of the Anglican Alliance’s role in building relationships and bringing people together across the Anglican Communion.

Rob Dawes, Executive Director of the Anglican Alliance, said: 'It is an honour to be able to be part of this really important meeting, and journey together as the Holy Spirit guides these provinces to work more closely together. In a world where we are so often seeing fracturing and polarisation of different groups, it is refreshing to see people actively choosing to come together to support each other in the challenges they face.’

Members of Mothers’ Union from across North West Wales gathered at Bangor Cathedral on Sunday 9 August to mark the organisation’s 150th anniversary.

The celebration is one of a series of events taking place around the world throughout 2026 to mark 150 years of Mothers’ Union.

During the service, the Diocese of Bangor Mothers’ Union was admitted to the Community of the Cross of Nails, a worldwide Christian network committed to peacebuilding and reconciliation.

The Very Revd Dr Manon Ceridwen James, Dean of Bangor Cathedral and Bishop-elect of Bangor, said:

“The Mothers’ Union has spent 150 years turning faith into practical care for families and communities. Joining the Community of the Cross of Nails is a natural expression of that commitment. This cross will be a visible reminder of our shared calling to pray for peace, work for reconciliation and bring healing where there is division.”

In her farewell sermon in Yaoundé, Cameroon, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, called for peace, saying the people of Cameroon ‘have suffered for far too long’ and encouraged ‘genuine and inclusive dialogue’.

Archbishop Sarah said peace ‘needs to have everyone around the table. That requires courage, it requires strength, and it requires commitment at every level of society, but particularly those in authority’.

The farewell service on August 4 concluded her 10-day pastoral trip to the Church of the Province of West Africa.

During the trip, Archbishop Sarah has visited churches, schools, historic sites and healthcare facilities in Ghana and Cameroon as well as preaching and listening to the lived experiences of Anglicans in the province.

The Archbishop said she had been 'profoundly moved' to witness the ministry of the Church in this region.

🌳 Today, 3 August, the Communion Forest marks its fourth birthday.

Launched with the planting of a symbolic tree during the Lambeth Conference in 2022, the Communion Forest has grown into a global movement of Anglicans protecting forests, planting trees and restoring ecosystems.

A new ‘A to Z of the Communion Forest’ brings together stories from across the Anglican Communion, from Australia to Zimbabwe, showing how churches are caring for creation in ways shaped by their own communities and environments.

Global Facilitator Nicholas Pande said: ‘It shows we are not just telling others what to do – we are planting, restoring and protecting creation ourselves.’
