The Greek coast is best sailed out of Athens, and most people do not realise it.

In collaboration with Yachting World, Helen took her family on a sailing adventure from Athens, exploring the islands, anchorages, and coastal stops that make this part of Greece so special.

A short sail out of Athens brings you to Cape Sounio, where you can anchor beneath the Temple of Poseidon and have lunch on deck looking up at it. Beyond that, the Cyclades open up, with islands like Kythnos, Serifos, and Sifnos offering a quieter, slower side of Greece when you arrive by boat.

You sail in the mornings and drop anchor somewhere peaceful in the afternoon, paddleboard around the bay, swim straight from the boat, and head ashore for dinner as the sun begins to set.

The best time to sail the Ionian depends on the kind of trip you want.

In spring, it is slower and quieter, with peaceful harbour fronts and more space in popular ports and anchorages that become much busier during the summer months. By July and August, the energy completely changes. Taverns stay open late, flotillas fill the bays, and the whole coastline feels far more social.

That is why there is never really one “best” month, it depends what kind of trip you actually want.

What makes Lefkada so good for sailing is that you get to experience these beaches completely differently to everyone else.

Instead of timing your visit around parking, queues or busy afternoons, you can anchor just offshore, swim straight from the boat, and move between places like Egremni, Porto Katsiki and Sivota at your own pace. It turns beaches that feel busy by land into somewhere far quieter and more relaxed.

Croatia’s best kept islands are rarely the ones you see all over social media, and Zlarin is one of them

For centuries, this tiny island supplied red coral to the royal courts of France, Spain and the Vatican, and you can still see that history in the old stone houses around the harbour. Now, it is known for something completely different, quiet waterfronts, no cars, clear water and evenings that move far slower than the mainland.

It is the kind of stop you only really hear about from people who have sailed here before.
