We’re really looking forward to welcoming guests back to our holiday cottages from next week! The beds are made, the cottages cleaned and the sun is out (albeit with the third morning of frost in a row!)

And this season, we have these lovely ladies, roaming around happily in the field by Sunrise Barn. Our children are selling their eggs for pocket money. They’re available in a mix of all sizes and colours in boxes of half a dozen for £1.20. You’ll see them on a little stand by the side of the drive, just before you reach Sunrise Barn and Ashwood Lodge (a bit further along the lane from Bide a Wee). We hope you enjoy them and enjoy your stay with us soon!

Here’s a nice wee teaser of a walk from the The Times and The Sunday Times over the weekend for when you return for your SRU with us. The start point is about 11 miles up Teesdale from Romaldkirk and it is one of several fantastic walking routes which begin in that period of the Dale, in amongst all of the natural offerings which the North Pennines AONB Partnership area has to show you.

While the Tees has got away with last week’s storms without any serious issues (unlike our neighbours over in Yorkshire), it’s certainly filled the rivers and becks unusually high for July!

Since stopping livestock grazing for the past 3 years, the bottom field on the farm has steadily evolved into a natural hay meadow, with an abundance of different grasses, flowers and mini beasts living amongst them undisturbed but for our dog careering through, caked in grass pollen! Here are a few pics of interesting things over the past few days.

Spring is here! In fact it’s practically summer! The first swallows were spotted on the farm yesterday, and tonight we saw the first bat of the year!

The North Pennines are well known for being a fantastic place for astronomy. Even here, on the edge of a village, you can pick out the brighter constellations with the naked eye.

Walk 5 minutes onto our farm on a clear night like tonight, and you can see the recognisable shapes of Orion to the south-east and Ursa Major (the Great Bear) to the North, with the distinct orange-red spot that is Mars off to the south-west (set amongst Pisces) with the tell-tale blinking lights of a dozen or more planes following the north-south corridor at high altitudes in front of it. And as your eyes become more accustomed to the dark, the infinite web of bright dots becomes more and more clear, with more and more stars and constellations making their presence known. It’s truly magical, with only our local owls breaking the silence around you.

Our New Year booking for this year has unfortunately just had to cancel so we now have a vacancy for New Year at Sunrise Barn! It will get snapped up quick but I will give first refusal to our Facebook friends. If you fancy 3 nights away over New Year for up to 9 people please get in touch as soon as possible. (Total cost £1400 for 3 nights additional nights can be arranged for £100 per night).

Autumn’s definitely getting closer. Here’s one of our elder bushes beginning to transform into the beautiful burnt colours of the season, with a healthy crop of berries still hanging on.
