Blackpool Illuminations are switched on today, marking the start of one of the resort’s best-known autumn traditions.

As darkness falls, several miles of Blackpool seafront will be lit up with colourful displays, illuminated tableaux and familiar landmarks picked out in lights.

It’s a good time to plan an autumn visit to Blackpool. Spend the day enjoying the Tower, piers, Pleasure Beach and seafront attractions, then stay into the evening to see the promenade transformed by the Illuminations.

One of Nantes’ most distinctive attractions is Les Machines de l’Île, an imaginative blend of engineering, theatre and fantasy created on the site of the city’s former shipyards.

Its best-known creation is the Grand Éléphant, a huge mechanical elephant that slowly makes its way around the site carrying passengers on its back. As it walks, its trunk moves, trumpets and sprays water over nearby spectators.

Les Machines de l’Île also includes the Galerie des Machines, where visitors can see extraordinary mechanical creatures and learn how they work, and the Carrousel des Mondes Marins, a large three-level carousel inspired by the creatures of the sea.

Influenced by the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci and the imaginary worlds of Nantes-born Jules Verne, the whole attraction is unlike a conventional museum or theme park. It’s one of the highlights of a visit to Nantes and particularly good for families.

🏰 Rising above the Moselle River, Reichsburg Castle is one of Cochem’s most striking landmarks.

Step aboard HMS Trincomalee in Hartlepool and you’re stepping into more than 200 years of naval history.

Launched in Bombay in 1817, this remarkable Royal Navy frigate is now the oldest British warship still afloat. She never saw battle, but her story took her across the world, from the Indian Ocean to anti-slavery patrols and later life as a training ship.

Today, beautifully restored at the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool, HMS Trincomalee is one of the North East’s most atmospheric historic attractions — all creaking decks, tall masts and tales from the Age of Sail.

A fascinating stop for anyone who loves maritime history, heritage days out or simply discovering something a little different on the coast.

High on the windswept headland at Tintagel Castle stands "Gallos" — the striking bronze figure often known as the King Arthur sculpture.

Created by sculptor Rubin Eynon, "Gallos" is not meant to be a literal statue of Arthur, but something more atmospheric: a ghostly kingly figure inspired by Tintagel’s royal past, Cornish legend, and the stories that have linked this dramatic place with Arthur for centuries.

With the Atlantic beyond and the ruins around it, the sculpture feels perfectly at home — part history, part myth, and part invitation to imagine.
