Tintern is open as usual and welcoming visitors.

However, please note the current roadworks:
The A466 Wye Valley road is closed north of Tintern and Llandogo (between Redbrook and Bigsweir Bridge) until 26th June. Access is still available as usual from Chepstow and the M48, but we recommend that those travelling from Monmouth use the B4293 (Trellech Road) and approach Tintern via Catbrook.

You can still visit places such as the Old Station Tintern, where you can enjoy a ride on the Miniature Railway, enjoy tea and cake from the cafe, or wander along a relaxing one-mile riverside circular walk. Old Station Tintern

Visit Tintern Abbey, which has a company of archers setting up camp over the late May Bank Holiday weekend (plus events throughout the year). Cadw

There's also the stunning Wye Valley Sculpture Garden Summer Exhibition, which opens on Sunday 24th May and will be open every Wednesday and weekends (2pm–5pm) until 13th September. Wye Valley Sculpture Garden, Tintern

Plus, there are all the great cafés, restaurants and shops in Tintern itself to explore so please don’t let the roadworks put you off!

Have you discovered this beautiful 6-mile route through the Monmouthshire countryside near Raglan yet?

Starting from the Clytha National Trust car park, this scenic walk follows part of the Usk Valley Walk to Chainbridge before heading inland via Bettws Newydd. Along the way you’ll pass the impressive Iron Age hill fort of Coed y Bwnydd, and at this time of year you will still catch the last of the stunning bluebell displays.

The route then takes you past the whimsical Clytha Castle folly before looping back to the start.

Expect breath taking views across to the Sugar Loaf, woodland and riverside trails, and beautiful displays of flowers throughout the walk.

If you fancy walking with others then join Chepstow Walkers are Welcome, who are heading out on this route this Saturday 16 May. It's £3 per person (booking essential) and they offer two guided walks each month in association with Monmouthshire Countryside department. Chepstow Walkers are Welcome

Inspired by Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday celebrations, we caught up with local wildlife cameraman Robin Smith who was lucky enough to have filmed Sir David right here in Monmouthshire.

Robin talks about his work as a natural history cameraman and his love of the Wye Valley. He shares what drew him to live and work here in Monmouthshire, along with his favourite places to explore, eat, and spend time with his family.

Happy 100th Birthday to Sir David Attenborough.

His incredible career has taken him across the world, and luckily for us, also here to ‘Visit Monmouthshire’. A few years ago he was walking through the bluebells in Colonel's Park Wood (near Trellech) and crouching alongside a Lower Wye Valley stream observing the White Throated Dippers for The Secret World of Sound (episode 2, "Love and Rivals").

A Monmouthshire cameraman , was lucky enough to meet him at the time and said “He’s been such a driving force for so many people who care for the natural world, and you just can’t help but be awe‑inspired by him.”

More recently you can also hear Sir David narrating on BBC Secret Garden – The Wye Valley filmed in Monmouthshire.

Thank you, Sir David, for bringing the joy and wonder of the natural world into our homes, and happy birthday!

Massive thanks to ©Gavin Thurston for this photo.

Have you tried High Tea at The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny? It's been rated the best afternoon tea outside London and they're holder of The British Tea Guild's Top City and Country Afternoon Tea Award.

It's one of the reasons The Angel was awarded the 'Best Foodie Hotel in the UK' last year, with the cakes and bread coming fresh from their own Angel Bakery over the road. The hotel as been at the heart of Abergavenny since the 18th century, and remains a family run business that's a credit to the town.

If you're planning on staying, we'd recommend taking advantage of the 'Vineyard Break', which includes a tour and tasting at the Decanter World Wine Award winning White Castle Vineyard.

Feeling creative?
Have you been to Craft Renaissance, near Usk?

It is a collective of independent businesses based in a converted barn complex in the stunning Usk Valley. They have a fantastic café where you can eat in or take away, with their Sunday lunch coming highly recommended!

You can then visit the Gallery, where you will find a host of inspiring local art and crafts. They also have a Makers Studio where you can book workshops to learn a variety of crafts, from jewellery making and linocut workshops to mini masterpiece paintings or making your own clay Welsh dragon to take away.

If you are looking for something creative to do with small friends or family groups, they also offer bespoke workshops just for you to enjoy. To complete the experience, there is also accommodation on site if you are planning a trip away.

Did you catch Monmouthshire on the new BBC David Attenborough series Secret Garden? One episode, “The Wye Valley”, was filmed right here in Monmouthshire, not far from Tintern, in the private garden of local wildlife cinematographer

The programme shows just how much amazing wildlife shares the wooded slopes of the Wye Valley with us. Dormice tucked up under leaf litter, tawny owls hunting and raising their young in nest boxes, and badgers coming out at dusk with playful cubs exploring the garden. There’s even a queen buff‑tailed bumblebee setting up home among the wildflowers.

Along the stream, dippers dive for insects, while flycatchers arrive to make the most of the summer insect boom. As autumn arrives, earthworms and other invertebrates get to work recycling nutrients back into the soil — a full year of wildlife, often happening just out of sight.

You can explore this area yourself along the Wye Valley Walk, which runs from Chepstow to Monmouth (via Tintern) and takes in the woodland, meadows and riverbanks of the Wye Valley.

Or you can watch the series at anytime on BBC iplayer. The whole series is worth watch, but this is our favourite of course.

📷Thanks to BBC for the stunning photos.

We love that award winning artist Louise Collis takes her inspiration from the Monmouthshire landscape, in this case the stunning bluebell displays at Coed-y-Bwnydd.

Monmouthshire has been inspiring artists since Turner in the 18th century, and it's fantastic to see that tradition continuing today. You can see Louise's work Tuesday, Friday and Saturday in her Abergavenny studio on Monk Street (opposite St Mary's Priory Church).

Discover more beautiful woodland areas with stunning bluebell displays on our Visit Monmouthshire website.

In Monmouthshire we are proud to have amazing rural communities throughout the county to celebrate alongside our stunning landscapes and traditional market towns.

A wonderful example of this was recognised when The Halfway at Tal-y-Coed, a 17th century coaching inn, won the Local Community Award at the annual Wales Food and Drink Awards. The award is for Welsh businesses that have made a real difference to their local community, and anyone who has visited the Halfway will know how well earned the award is.

They are passionate about supporting their local rural community and so set up a community hub and village shop. It’s a place that sells local produce, hosts workshops and activities to bring people together, and has a great programme of events from pub quizzes and live music to pop up kitchens and more.

🍺Open: Friday 4:00 – 11:00pm, Saturday 6.00 – 11:00pm, Sunday 12:00 – 10:00pm

The Halfway is nestled 'halfway' along the old road between the historic market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth. If you plan to visit this authentic rural Monmouthshire pub, why not combine your trip with a visit to the nearby White Castle, a walk along the Offa’s D**e Path, or the popular Three Castles Walk?

Congratulations as well to our other Monmouthshire businesses recognised at the Welsh Food and Drink Awards :

• Small Drinks Producer – Tumptonics (Highly Commended) Tumptonics
• Artisan Business of the Year (Shortlisted) – The Crafty Pickle Co. (Live Fermented Foods) Crafty Pickle Co. Fermented Foods
