Leasowe Gunsite, one of several coastal defences that was placed around the Wallasey Coastline during the Second World War.

Much of Wallasey stretching to Meols was littered with Dragons Teeth to stop amphibious vehicles from coming ashore. Anti Aircraft Guns and other defence units manned by the Homeguard. Wallasey was well protected

You can still find other pillboxes and gun sites around the peninsula with Fort Perch Rock being the main defence on the Banks of the River Mersey

In 1973, A secret group of New Brighton local residents. who were against plans to allow car racing as a permanent attraction at the Tower Stadium, was formed. They called themselves LOLA (League of Law-Abiding Anarchists) and their tactic was to make round-the-clock telephoning of the Town Hall and a constant stream stream of people making inquiries at local government offices. Other tactics included making mass payment of rates on the last possible day and the presentation of cheque's written on unusual objects! Their aim was to cause disruption until the Labour-controlled Town Council changed its mind. A spokesman for the group said "It is possible that we might be charged with conspiracy. Eminent counsel has made this clear to us, and so we have adopted the methods of the French Resistance in not knowing each other's real names. We each use a pseudonym by which we are known to each other. This will obviate any legal action against us, in case we do stray accidentally outside the law, although this is not our intention."

NEW BRIGHTON TOWER TRAGEDY. COWBOY FOUND SHOT.

Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser - Thursday 03 September 1908

Yesterday afternoon, just before the Wild West performance at New Brighton Tower began, a tragic discovery was made in the arena, George Price, a cowboy from Oklahoma, aged twenty-two, who came over with Colonel Cummins, being found dead, with the top of his head blown on. It is said that Price was to have been married to-day to an English girl, and he had heard to refer of late to his lack of money. t rice was the ammunition man. whose duty it was to see to the fi****ms, and it is not known yet whether the affair was an accident or whether was a case of su***de.

The New Brighton Tower Stadium - Home of New Brighton FC

A Lost treasure of the Seaside Resort was our Football Stadium. At one time we had 2, the other being Sandheys Park off Rake Lane.

The Stadium at The Tower was utilised by the US Army from 1942-44 whilst they were here for training on the Beaches and Outdoor Pool’s. They were much loved by everybody during their stay and they were helpful in more ways than one to our Town

Now occupied by a small housing estate for Working Families and Retirees, it's only the Road names that show any memory of this once thriving Sports & Entertainment Complex.

The History of New Brighton Tower Athletic Stadium

When the Tower and Ballroom was built, the owners decided that a Sports Stadium would be required for the months that the Fairground would be closed. It opened in 1900

The centre of the arena was used to stage both football as well as many spectacular events including a Wild West Show from May to October 1908.

There was also an inside track used for athletics and a banked track where the World Cycling Championships were held in July 1922.

There was even a Stadium with a seating capacity of 8,000 though football matches hardly drew in 1,000 spectators. That changed in the Post World War 2 Years when New Brighton FC moved from Sandheys Park to the Tower. The Post World War II Period seen the return of New Brighton FC and a newly built stadium

The area of old Liscard Vale has long been associated to Witchcraft and was known locally as “Hells Brow”, and ancient Rock carvings depicting Sacrafices are said to be buried within the grounds of the old Tower Grounds which dates back to Medieval Times. The Local Legend of the Magazines Witch has been told for many Decades and it says that one of the unfortunate Witches of Liscard Vale is said to Haunt the nearby Public House previously known as The Black Horse.
