Lost Places of Wallasey - The Capitol Cinema

Look how Clean and Tidy Liscard used to be....

Before the building of The Capitol, Gibbon's Stables use to occupy the site. Established in 1860 it had a large yard, stables and carriage stables. They hired out horses and supplied them for the Fire Brigade. They were carriage proprietors and they were often hired for weddings and funerals. They were soon to move with the times and went over to motor vehicles. In the front of the forecourt were large iron gates which were kept closed and only opened to allow the cars to go in and out. As the years went by, the firm became part of the John W. Griffin and Son, the leading wedding and funeral directors in the town. The buildings were later demolished and The "Capitol" Picture House was built in its place and opened in September 1926. The cinema was able to seat 1,390 patrons and had a large balcony with a tiered form of seating. There was also an orchestra. After the cinema was modernised the Capitol became known as the 'A.B.C.Cinema' in 1959. As with most cinema's in Wallasey the Capitol closed in 1974 and was altered for the purpose of Bingo and a Nightclub. Sadly all is now long gone and a Takeaway occupied the Frontage....We visit many of these old forgotten locations on the Tours

Lost Places of Wallasey - The Assembly Rooms

It was here that much of New Brighton's Planning and Development was made.
Situated on Albion Street, this fine building once held many important discussions and meetings in regards to the development of the Seaside area of New Brighton.
The Rise of the Seaside Resort had much to thank to the Assembly Rooms and the People that attended.

Much investment was brought in with Rich Gentry from Liverpool and further afield invited to come and invest in the Area.

They would stay in many of our fine Hotels in Upper Brighton. The Hotel Victoria, The Albion Hotel, The Little Brighton Hotel and The Sandrock Hotel were there better known hostelries.

As time went by, the Assembly rooms were no longer needed and became part of the Hotel Victoria. This became the Restaurant area and you may have eaten there.
Disaster came when the Hotel Victoria was ordered to be demolished and both buildings removed. It has been replaced by Flats. More to be told on the Talks inside the Fort

Lost Places of Wallasey - St Columba’s Church

St. Columba's Church was built of red pressed brick and stood on the corner of Trafalgar Avenue at the beginning of Seabank Road. It was built during the early part of the 20th Century and took twenty years to complete before opening in 1923. The hall was under the church, as it was erected on the incline of the hill. The builder was James A. Milestone, who lived in Manor Mansions in Manor Road. It cost £4,500 to build and opened on 16th June 1904 under the care of the Revd. H.H Pitts, and became a separate parish from St. John's Church in 1922.

The church was designed in the 16th Century style by C.M. Deacon of Liverpool. It had two organs, a piano, a harmonium and a pipe organ, a really musical church!

During the war the hall was used by the Civil Defence and could be used as emergency food-kitchen.

In July 1971 by order of the Queen in Council, the two parishes of St. Mary and St. Columba were united under the incumbency of the Revd. Hugh Linn, M.A., and the present parish of St. Mary with St. Columba was formed. The last service in the building was held in 1971. The church was demolished in 1973.

Lost Places of Wallasey - Somerville House

Some distance down Poulton Road, almost opposite to Hampsted Road, was 'Somerville House'. Built by James Finlay, a Tea Merchant, prior to 1860, it was his residence until the early 1870's, although he had a sad life inasmuch as he lost an infant son in 1855, and five years later his wife, who died at Clifton, Bristol, at the early age of 35. His successor was Lawrence Keizer, founder of the well-known glass firm of L.Keizer & Co., which later became part of a large company. Mr Keizer's stay at 'Somerville House' lasted nearly thirty years, but after the Poulton-cum-Seacombe School Board erected what was then the Somerville Elementary School close by, in 1892, the character of the neighbourhood began to change, and although we find Mr William March in residence at 'Somerville House' as late as 1905, it was probably soon after this that the demolition squad moved in.

Lost Places of Wallasey - The Floating Roadway

Did you know that you could once drive direct onto the Wallasey Ferries at Seacombe?

There has been a crossing from Seacombe since the 16th Century. Wallasey was the Premier Crossing to Liverpool for many years thanks to the Wallasey Ferries. Our Boats were give Royal status after World War I

In the 1920's and 1930's the Seacombe Ferry terminal buildings and the approaches were rebuilt and improved at a cost of £98,443.

A new three lane floating roadway was built in 1925 and was opened by Lord Derby on the 23rd October 1926.

The New and Current Seacombe Ferries terminal buildings and approaches officially opened on the 10th April 1933.

During WW2 the Stage narrowly escaped Bomb Damage but the moored Ferry was not so lucky...

In the 1960's the floating roadway was removed,

The old landing stage was removed in 2000 and replaced with a new stage.

Lost Places of Wallasey - Central Park Bandstand

Many British Celebrations took place throughout the year in old Wallasey. The Bandstand in Central Park gave many Orchestral and Dramatic Performances to Folk on Sundays and Bank Holidays. It was a long working week in days gone by. Until recently, there was always Brilliant Bonfire and Halloween Displays each year officiated by the Park Ranger and involved The Wall Gardens. The Rose Gardens were also a place of beauty until it was removed by Wirral Borough Council

The land was originally part of Sir John Tobin's Estate and he is buried in his Churchyard of St John's next door.

The Park was opened following the Death of Harold Littledale, Liscard Hall (Formerly Moors Hey House" and grounds were purchased by the Local Board and thrown open to the public. The house was turned into an arts school and renamed 'Liscard Science & Art College'. The college closed in 1982 and in 1988 was renamed 'Liscard Hall' and was leased to 'Serve Wirral Training' where the Youth Training Scheme (government funded programme) had their base but Serve Wirral Training went into voluntary liquidation in 2003

The end of 'Liscard Hall' came in July 2008 when, after the hall had laid empty for a number of years, the building caught fire. The structure was deemed unsafe and was demolished.

Lost Places of Wallasey - The Old Courthouse

Can any of you remember The Continental Cinema on Liscard Road?

The Old Court House Picturedome was in Liscard Road and began life as a Police Station, being built in 1845. The building was then converted into a 400 seater cinema and opened on Saturday 31st January, 1914, under the management of Mr. James Burt. The opening feature included 'Her Majesty the Little Queen'

Bomb damage during the air-raids caused the flat roof to leak and by 1941 the overall condition of the building was dire. Further problems occurred when the manager, Arthur Bell, misused the night takings and spent it in the nearby public house. With the bills not being paid the electricity supply to the cinema was disconnected.

In April 1949 Local Businessman Leslie Blond introduced a trial season of continental films which proved successful so he embarked on mainly showing foreign films at what was by then described as The Continental Picture House (the word Picture House were eventually dropped). The Continental was Merseyside's only commercial cinema specialising in foreign films up to 1963.

On 2nd November 1963 the cinema closed for the final time with a double feature programme, 'The Quare Fellow' with Patrick McGoohan (1928-2009) and Sylvia Simms (1916-1992) plus 'Battle of the Sexes' with Peter Sellers (1925-1980). The building was subsequently used for a time as a bingo hall but was finally demolished in 1986 and new properties built on the site.
