I am giving a driving tour of Purbeck and the Jurassic Coast next week and went over to Swanage in preparation.

The building of the current pier (pictured) was started in 1895 and in the second and third pictures you can see what remains of the earlier 1859 pier. It was decided a longer pier was needed as there was a huge amount of trade (especially stone) and foot traffic on the pier and so the current was created!

It is a lovely example of a Victorian pier and well worth a visit!

Plenty of prehistory on show all over England. Here’s a fantastic lesser-known monument. Stoney Littleton Long Barrow. A chambered tomb dating back to 3500BC, one of the Cotswold Severn group of monuments. In Shoscombe Vale near Bath. Just waiting for your visit.

Salisbury Plain is rightly famous for all of its prehistory, but is also a great place for wildlife. There has been a successful reintroduction of the once-extinct Great Bustard. Now protected. Large, slow and tasty has, historically, not been a good combination for a bird! Salisbury Plain is perfect habitat for them. The parent birds for the reintroduction were from the Steppes.

Here is a Great Bustard at Stonehenge.

Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, a short ferry crossing from Southampton, Portsmouth or Lymington on England’s south coast. Rebuilt in the mid 1800’s by Prince Albert as a family home for Queen Victoria, himself and their four children (eventually there were nine). Osborne House is surrounded by extensive gardens and woodlands and even a private beach. The house is built in an Italian Renaissance style and is full of stunning artworks. The Royal Family would spend three months each year at Osborne.It is now open to the public and in the care of English Heritage. The artworks and sculptures belong to the Royal Collection Trust.
