Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway members and supporters Travel by narrow gauge steam train through beautiful Mid Wales countryside.

Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service for all the family and a welcome change from the rush of every day life. Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside. All of our trains are steam hauled, either by one of our unique original locomotives or one from abroad. The carriages too are special; those in regular use being from Hungary and Austria with access to the enclosed seating area via an open balcony - a great way to watch the world go by.

The Beer & Cider Festival starts is on Friday and Saturday (10/11th July)
Trains (diesel hauled):
On Friday there will be only be an evening return trip from Llanfair to Welshpool
On Saturday trains will run to the Pink Timetable with the addition of an evening train running from Llanfair to Welshpool & Return.

NB The use of diesel traction is to mitigate the high probability of steam locos starting lineside fires and also to avoid the risk of footplate volunteers being exposed to the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Steam loco footplates are hot enough on a 'normal' warm day. In the current heatwave to conditions are awful.

Last, but not least, if after visiting the event you see the trains depicted in our photo in the station then you must have had a good time.

🚂LOCO CHANGE: Diesel traction until 24th July 2026☀

Due to the continued high temperatures, and for the safety of our locomotive crews, all trains will be diesel-hauled until 24th July inclusive. The sustained heat and lack of rain means a high risk of lineside fires, and the conditions in the steam locomotive cab are unsustainable for the welfare of our volunteer footplate crews.

Your train will now be hauled by No. 17 'The Diema', a Taiwanese narrow-gauge Diesel engine originally built in Diepholz, Germany in 1979 for the Taiwan Sugar Corporation. On Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th, No.7 'Chattenden' will also be operating. An updated locomotive roster can be found on our website.

There will be an evening train to take you from Llanfair Caereinion to Welshpool and back on both evenings!
On Friday:
Evening Special, leaving Llanfair Caereinion Station (LLA) at 18.00, and leaving Welshpool Raven Square Station (WPL) at 22.30.
On Saturday:
Evening Special leaving LLA at 18.30, and leaving WPL at 22.30.
