Hidden Gems of Tuscany

Everyone knows Florence, Siena, Pisa and San Gimignano. But sometimes it’s the smaller places that stay with us the most. The places where you wander through quiet streets, enjoy a coffee in the piazza, and feel like you’ve discovered a different side of Tuscany. Today, we're sharing three of our favourites.

📍 Loro Ciuffenna
Nestled at the foot of the Pratomagno mountains, this beautiful medieval village sits above a deep gorge carved by the Ciuffenna River. One of its highlights is the historic watermill in the centre of the village, believed to be one of the oldest still-operating watermills in Tuscany. Stone houses, charming bridges and winding alleyways make Loro Ciuffenna a wonderful destination for a relaxing day out.

📍 Poppi
With its impressive Castello dei Conti Guidi, Poppi is instantly recognisable from afar. Located in the green Casentino Valley, the village offers spectacular views from the castle over the surrounding countryside. And then there’s Saverio, the cat who has become famous well beyond Poppi thanks to social media and the internet. If you're lucky, you might spot this local celebrity during your stroll through the village.

📍 Volpaia
In the heart of the Chianti Classico region lies Volpaia, a tiny fortified village that has beautifully preserved its medieval character. Wine is an integral part of daily life here, and Chianti Classico is still produced within the ancient stone walls. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely walk, a glass of wine, and a peaceful moment overlooking the vineyards.

Thermal Springs in Tuscnay:

Not only is Tuscany known for its wine, olive groves, and historic towns. Natural thermal springs bubble up throughout the region, and their warm, mineral-rich waters have been appreciated since the time of the Etruscans and Romans. Whether surrounded by nature or located in historic spa towns, taking a dip in the hot springs is, for many people, an unforgettable Tuscan experience.

♨️ Saturnia
One of the more famous thermal springs in Tuscany is the Cascate del Mulino. Waters reaching temperatures of up to 37°C flow non-stop over the natural limestone terraces and is freely accessible. Truely a natural wonder.

♨️ Bagni San Filippo
On the edge of Monte Amiata, you’ll find natural pools nestled in the forest. Particularly impressive is the striking bright-white limestone formation known as the Balena Bianca (“White Whale”), which was formed by the mineral-rich springs.

♨️ Bagno Vignoni
An unusual place in Tuscany as in the heart of the village, rather than a traditional market square, there is a large Renaissance-era thermal pool. Bathing there is not permitted, but just below the village, pools along the river invite you to relax.

♨️ Terme di Petriolo
Between Siena and Montalcino lie these lesser-known thermal springs on the banks of the Farma River. Here, you can enjoy the natural pools and modern thermal facilities. Ideal for anyone looking for a quieter experience.

♨️ Rapolano Terme
Just around 30 kilometres from Siena, you will find one of Tuscany’s most popular spa towns. The two thermal complexes, Terme San Giovanni and Antica Querciolaia, offer soothing thermal pools with wonderful views over the rolling landscape of the Crete Senesi.

For more information about Tuscany’s thermal springs and many other ideas for day trips, take a look at our travel guide.
