Today we’re taking you to Siena – a city that, perhaps more than any other, embodies history, tradition and pride in its identity.

Of course, Siena is best known for the Palio di Siena, one of the world’s most famous horse races. This historic event takes place twice a year, this year on 2nd July and 16th August. The race sees Siena’s different Contrade, the city’s historic districts, competing against one another. Each Contrada has its own colours, symbols and traditions, which continue to shape everyday life in the city.
But the Palio is far more than just the race itself. Even if horse racing is not really your thing, the festive parades, flag throwers, drummers and the strong sense of identity and belonging among the Contrade create a fascinating experience. Even outside Palio season, the historic districts are everywhere, their emblems decorate façades, fountains and gateways, and if you’re lucky, you might come across a group of flag throwers practising in one of the winding alleyways.
Siena also has an extraordinary history. It is home to the world’s oldest surviving bank, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472. Today, the entire historic centre is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Our personal tip: Explore Siena with a local guide. The stories behind the Contrade, the palaces and the famous Piazza del Campo bring the city’s past vividly to life.
And of course, no visit would be complete without the food. Be sure to try Panforte and Ricciarelli, two of Siena’s most famous local specialities.
