After a sabbatical in South America in 2011, I was hooked on adventure travel. I learned to drive a truck & became a tour leader with Dragoman Overseas Travel, sharing adventures with passengers all over Asia, Africa and the Americas.

My favourite experiences include canoeing the Zambezi river, watching elephants using their trunks as snorkels to cross the river (main picture) & hiking on multi

-day treks like the W-Walk, the Annapurna Circuit & our Wild Andes trek in Peru (pictured opposite). It's hard to choose a favourite country, but I love the chaos & colours of India and the vibrancy & diversity of Brazil.

I'm passionate about responsible travel, the protection of wildlife and making sure that the communities we visit benefit from tourism as much as we do. Responsible Travel Choices That Actually Matter 🍂

Responsible travel is something I’m often asked about. The truth is, it’s not always about finding the "perfect" eco-friendly holiday. Sometimes it's about making better choices that have a positive impact on the places we visit.

For me, some of the things that matter most are:

✓ Staying in locally owned accommodation where possible
✓ Using local guides who share their knowledge, culture and expertise
✓ Choosing wildlife experiences that put animal welfare first
✓ Supporting communities through meaningful tourism rather than staged experiences
✓ Travelling at a pace that allows you to connect with a destination, rather than simply ticking off highlights

Many of the destinations I work with, from Botswana and Namibia to India and Costa Rica, have shown that tourism can play an important role in conservation, protecting wildlife, supporting livelihoods and preserving cultural traditions.

Responsible travel doesn't mean sacrificing comfort or enjoyment. In fact, I often find it leads to richer, more authentic experiences and a deeper understanding of the places we visit.
On our trip to Kerala last year, we experienced just this - hotels who supported the local communities, food sourced from their own kitchen gardens, e-bikes and kayaks available to use and sustainable approaches to managing waste and water. All wrapped up in incredibly beautiful and simple but luxurious lodges and hotels.

When planning a trip, I always try to consider not just where you're going, but how you travel once you're there.

After all, the best journeys leave a positive impact on both the traveller and the destination.

Destination Spotlight: Botswana 🇧🇼

One of Africa's most exceptional safari destinations, Botswana is hard to beat.

What makes Botswana so special isn't just the wildlife, although that's certainly spectacular. It's the combination of vast wilderness, lower visitor numbers, outstanding guiding and a conservation-led approach that creates a safari experience that feels genuinely wild.

This journey combines three of Botswana's most iconic wildlife areas, each offering a different perspective on the country.

In the Makgadikgadi region, the green season brings one of Africa's lesser-known wildlife spectacles as thousands of zebra and wildebeest migrate across the landscape. How I Help Clients Plan Complex Trips 🌎

Destination Spotlight: South Luangwa, Zambia 🇿🇲

Of the places I visited when I was working in Africa, South Luangwa remains one of my personal favourites.

It's not the biggest safari destination, nor the most famous. But for me, that's exactly its appeal.

South Luangwa feels wild, authentic and unhurried. The Luangwa River winds through the valley, attracting an incredible concentration of wildlife, while the absence of large-scale tourism means you can spend hours exploring without encountering another vehicle.

This is one of Africa's great walking safari destinations. Stepping out on foot with an experienced guide completely changes the way you experience the bush. Suddenly it's not just about the big animals, but the tracks, birds, plants and smaller details that bring the landscape to life.

Wildlife sightings can be exceptional. Large herds of elephant and buffalo gather along the riverbanks, hippos fill the waterways, and predators including lion, leopard and African wild dog all call the valley home. The area is also home to species found nowhere else, including Thornicroft's giraffe and Cookson's wildebeest.

I love South Luangwa's atmosphere. The camps are small and intimate, the guiding is outstanding, and every day unfolds at a pace that allows you to really connect with the landscape around you.

For travellers looking for a safari that feels immersive rather than busy, this is one of Africa's finest wildlife experiences.
