Back to reality now after a restful and chilled week on the French island of Corsica and reflecting on just how different a holiday it was for us, and up there amongst the best. Corsica is a small island, north of Sardinia and so close to both France and Italy. It’s just a one hour 45 minute flight from London. Probably best known as being the birthplace of Napoleon, we soon learnt the welcoming and friendly Corsican people are very proud of their island nation. And everywhere you go you will find more Corsican wines, cured meats, cheeses and specialities than you will French produce. We stayed in the small town of Calvi on the northwest coast, famous for its historic Citadel which dominates the town. Around 80% of all holidaymakers to Corsica are French with the rest mainly coming from other European countries and of course us Brits! I booked our trip through one of tour operators Corsican Places who are specialists on the island and offer holidays from the UK across the island, including the popular areas such as Porto Vecchio, Bastia and Ajaccio. The island boasts so many beautiful white sand beaches with crystal clear waters. Calvi is the perfect destination for anyone really - young families will love the beach of soft sand and a gentle shallow incline into the calm sea (no waves) meaning you’re still only knee deep in about 20 metres off shore. But it’s also perfect for couples, with its casual culture and not rowdy. Restaurants line up alongside the marina where multi million pound yachts are docked with their rich and sometimes famous inhabitants (the Beckhams were there the week before us, we saw golfer Jack Nicklaus’s yacht docked in front of us as we enjoyed a glace to cool down, and the officials at the airport when we left were so excited as they’d just stamped the passport of Leonardo de Caprio and were happily sharing their selfies to all of us!). Yet meals didn’t come with the rich and famous price tag with plenty of 3 course menus available at 25 Euros per person. A bargain these days!
What I loved most was the simplicity. Staying in a family owned and operated apartment complex, uncrowded with plenty of sunbeds available around any of the three pools at anytime of the day, the getting up early to wander to the end of the road for freshly baked pain and croissants every morning and not having to be held to time for anything. I even read two books in the week, and started a third!!! Unheard of for me. Shows how relaxing it really was.
Corsican Places have lots of late summer offers and I am happy to share my experience with anyone who might be interested in booking their next relaxing break on this beautiful island, for this year or next! Just let me know.
