It's the little things…

There's something rather lovely about arriving somewhere for your holiday and finding that somebody has already thought about the little things.

At Cedar Holme, we like to make sure our guests have a few essentials waiting for them when they arrive.

Tea ☕
Coffee
Milk
Orange juice
Bottled water
Treats

And of course, something for the four-legged members of the family too. 🐾

And sometimes we'll even ask guests before they arrive what milk, tea or coffee they prefer.

Because why wait until you're unpacked to discover you've forgotten the essentials?
The kettle can go on before the suitcases are even properly unpacked.

That's our kind of holiday.

And judging by some of our recent reviews, the welcome pack seems to be going down rather well!

Although we're beginning to think the biscuits may actually be the main attraction…

Holiday packing tip: stop packing for every possible weather scenario.

Actually… we're in Derbyshire.

Ignore me. 😂

Pack for all of them.

You might wake up to beautiful blue skies, head out for a walk and then discover that the Peak District has decided you really needed a shower.

So, if you're coming to stay at Cedar Holme, we'd recommend:
🥾 Proper walking shoes or boots
🧥 A waterproof jacket
🧦 Spare socks
🐕 A towel for muddy paws
🎒 A small backpack for your walks
☀️ Sunglasses
🌧️ And possibly an umbrella…
Because British weather.

You don't need to bring your entire wardrobe though.

Cedar Holme is warm, cosy and well equipped, so you can concentrate on enjoying your break rather than wondering whether you've packed enough stuff to survive an expedition to Everest.

And if you've forgotten something?

There's a good chance you'll find what you need locally.
Pack sensible. Leave room for cake.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “By a country mile…”

We absolutely LOVE hearing what our guests think of Cedar Holme, but every now and then a review comes along that makes us do a little happy dance.

Steven and his wife recently stayed with us and said:
“Without a doubt this was the best equipped accommodation myself and my wife have ever stayed in by a country mile.”

Three historic Derbyshire houses… and one rather remarkable woman connecting them all.

If you enjoy exploring historic houses while you're staying at Cedar Holme, there's a fascinating little connection between Sutton Scarsdale Hall, Bolsover Castle and Hardwick Hall.

Sutton Scarsdale Hall was built between 1724 and 1729, but the site had an earlier house dating back to the 15th century. Today, the roofless hall gives you a fascinating glimpse of what was once an incredibly grand country house.

But here's where it gets interesting…
Bess of Hardwick.

Bess was one of the most powerful and wealthy women of Elizabethan England and was responsible for the spectacular Hardwick Hall — famous for having “more glass than wall.”

And her family connections stretched across the area.

Her son, Sir Charles Cavendish, was connected with Bolsover Castle, which was later developed into the extraordinary aristocratic retreat you can visit today.

So you can spend a day exploring three very different historic places and discover that they're all part of a much bigger Derbyshire story.

And the best bit?
They're all right on our doorstep here at Cedar Holme.

History, beautiful buildings and a good excuse for a day out. What more could you want?

A little visitor popped in!

We had a very cute little visitor at Cedar Holme recently...
A hedgehog decided to come and have a wander around the farm.

We absolutely love seeing all the wildlife that visits us here. You never quite know who you'll spot next — from deer and foxes to Colin the pheasant, and now this little prickly chap!

He was happily going about his business, completely unaware that he'd become the star of the show.

We wonder if he'll be back for another visit soon...

A little wildlife update from the farm...

As you’ll know, we’re lucky enough to have deer living in the field behind ours, and recently we’ve been spotting a lovely mum and baby.

They haven’t been close enough for us to get a decent photo yet, but we did manage to capture this little glimpse of them.

You can clearly see Mum, but the baby had wandered into the long grass and is doing a very good job of blending in... so you might have to zoom in and play spot the deer!

It was such a lovely sight to see, and hopefully they’ll venture a little closer at some point so we can get some better photos.

For now, though, we’ll just enjoy watching them from afar

Well, the rain finally arrived! 🌧

After well over 30 days without any proper rain, we finally woke up to a good soaking at the farm.

And you know what? It was actually rather lovely! Everything felt so fresh this morning, the grass has had a much-needed drink, and the whole farm seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.

And we've added something new for our guests to enjoy too...

We've treated ourselves to some new wooden garden furniture, giving you the perfect spot to sit, relax and take in those lovely views over the fields towards Chesterfield.

Let's just hope the rain doesn't decide to stay for the next 30 days!

We've got some bad news... and some good news!

The bad news? 😬

We're now fully booked for August and September! A huge thank you to everyone who has chosen to stay at Cedar Holme this summer.

The good news? 🎉

If you've been thinking about booking an autumn getaway, you're in luck! We still have a few dates available in October.

Autumn is one of our favourite times of year here. The trees begin to turn, the mornings become crisp, the woodland next to the cottage is full of colour, and it's the perfect excuse to come back after a day exploring the Peak District, put your feet up and enjoy a cosy evening.

If October sounds like your kind of escape, we'd recommend booking sooner rather than later before those last few dates disappear too!

Looking for a great day out during your stay?

Just around 35 minutes from Cedar Holme, you'll find the beautiful Kedleston Hall – one of Derbyshire's most impressive country houses.

Whether you're a history lover, enjoy a leisurely stroll, or simply appreciate stunning architecture, Kedleston Hall has something for everyone.

Take a tour of the magnificent mansion, wander through the beautifully landscaped parkland, keep an eye out for the resident deer, or simply enjoy a coffee and a slice of cake in the café while taking in the views.

It's a fantastic place to spend a few hours, whatever the season, and makes for a wonderful day out before returning to Cedar Holme to put your feet up after all that exploring.
