Route Napoléon, Comb Laval, Gorge du Verdon Tour Day 8. Another day of riding some fabulous Alpine passes awaited us as we left Italy and crossed back into France. Col de l'Iseran being the highlight and also the highest pass in Europe. Heading away from the cool temperatures of Alps and back past Lake Annecy where we stopped for a delicious ice cream by the lake side. Ice creams finished it was time to move on towards our hotel for the evening and a lovely meal in a local brasserie to finish a brilliant day of riding and spectacular scenery.

Arguably the best days riding on our Alps & Dolomites Grand Tour, where we ride all the classic Swiss passes in one amazing day! Judge for yourself and join us in July on our 2025 tour. Below is a recap of a brilliant day on our 2024 trip.

Alps and Dolomites Grand Tour Day 11. Perhaps today is the highlight of the tour with a day riding around 6 of the best Swiss passes, although it's a difficult one to call as we have riding so many amazing roads on this tour. The day starts a little misty and rainy so we wait at the hotel for it to clear, still foggy as we head up the Nufenen but as we reach the summit and drop down the other side its clear and sunny and that remains with us for the rest of the day. Cobblestones of Tremola next and then onto St Gottard after a coffee stop. Susten followed by Grimsal, Furka in reverse from yesterday and then we finish the day riding the Nufenen the other way from this morning. The passes in this part of Switzerland are just superb and photos really don't do the scenery justice, if you ride a bike you really should experience them at least once. Heading back towards France tomorrow as we start our journey north back towards home.

Austrian and Swiss Alps Tour Day 9. One last ride up the Grimsel Pass as we head away from the Alps today. Obligatory photo at the rusty biker and then onwards across Switzerland. We use little known back roads that wend their way north towards France across beautiful countryside which is in the full throws of harvest. We cross the border into France and travel more quiet traffic free back roads to our last coffee stop of the day. Cakes and tubs of sorbet were the selected options😋. Suitable refreshed we head to our hotel for the evening on the edge of the Vosges. Off towards the Ardennes tomorrow for our last overnight stop on this tour.

Day 7 Spain and Portugal Tour. Another beautiful morning as we leave our hotel and continue our journey south through Portugal. Some urban sprawl to negotiate at first and then as we travel on the vines start to appear on the roadside as we head closer to the Douro Valley for our first coffee stop right on the banks of the river. Following coffee we meander our way along with views of the Douro River and its terraced vineyards. A couple of photos stops and we then turn away from the river heading to our lunch stop. After lunch our route takes us still further south through small villages which probably have changed for years and onto our final destination of the day the Serra da Estrela mountains where we stay for two nights which gives us a full day tomorrow to explore the fantastic roads on offer. Another fabulous day's riding with glorious weather completed 😁👍

Austrian and Swiss Alps Tour Day 8. A day riding around the best passes in the Swiss Alps what's not to like! Perfect riding weather again, we really did draw the long straw on this tour 👍. It's really difficult to describe just how breathtaking the scenery is, we will try with few photos but to really understand you need to come and ride the roads and stop to take it all in. Did today beat yesterday? "This tour just gets better and better" "best roads I have ever ridden" were just some of the comments over dinner so perhaps it did 🤔😉😂. Heading north tomorrow back towards France, but still many a nice road to be ridden.

Alps and Dolomites Grand Tour Day 10. Off to Switzerland today, but not before we tackle the famous Passo Stelvio. We leave earlier than normal so we hit the pass when it quieter, with stop at the top for a browse around the shops, Terry bought some tea towels as you do? The option from the top is either to return back down a little and take the Umbrial Pass or to go down the famous zig zags that are in every photo you see of Stelvio, everyone opted for the lata. Photos stop completed at the bottom we head down and onto Switzerland. It's a day of Swiss passes today with the Ofenpass, then a lunch stop on the Fluela, we then traverse across Switzerland ending up on the Furkastrasse to finish our day. A long day but thoroughly enjoyable riding, can't beat a Swiss pass and of course the scenery is spectacular. Day off or Andermatt loop tomorrow 🤔 🏍👍

Day 6 Spain and Portugal Tour and our journey now turns south as we head towards Portugal. The weather gods were indeed on our side as we were greeted with a beautiful morning as we set off from Santiago. Mark even threatened to put his summer gloves on, which did cause some concerns as normally such reckless acts lead to torrential rain. There was no need to worry as the weather was glorious all day. Our route takes us through a couple of national parks with fantastic sweeping bends, superb roads surfaces and no traffic at all, such a joy to ride on such quiet roads. We had a stop at the disused border post between Spain and Portugal for some photos, followed by our last coffee stop of the day. Onwards to our hotel which is a former monastery with an excellent restaurant, where some of the group sampled the goat dish on offer which was superb. Another great day's riding, rounded off with a wonderful meal and great company. 👍

Route Napoléon, Comb Laval, Gorge du Verdon Tour Day 7. Our ride today takes us due north with a multitude of passes to navigate. We head through the Mercantor National Park heading towards Col de la Bonette stopping at Le Camp des Fourches a disused military base, which must have been a very bleak place to be stationed in the winter. Onto the summit, photos taken and its off to our next pass of the day Col du Vars. Not sure how many hairpins you can fit into one day, but we managed quite a few! Our hotel for the evening is in an Italian ski resort, so of course its off for pizza for dinner, would be rude not to being in Italy. More passes tomorrow including the highest in Europe👍

Route Napoléon, Comb Laval, Gorge du Verdon Tour Day 6. A ride out around the Gorge du Verdon was the choice for most of the group today while a couple of the guys decided to have a day off and explore the town. A relaxed ride of photo stops to admire the views, coffees and lunch in small town squares, not sure the photos will do the scenery justice but we will try!

Austrian and Swiss Alps Tour Day 7. Further west across Switzerland today as we head towards our next two night stay near to the Andermatt loop. Before we arrive we have the hardship to ride yet more fantastic Swiss passes in yet more glorious weather. Our day starts on the San Bernardino, followed by lunch on the Lukmanierpass, Oberalppass follows and to finish the day with its links to James Bond film Goldfinger we ride the Furka Pass. Can we top today with our ride out tomorrow around the Andermatt loop 🤔

Definitely a day of two halves weather wise on the our 7th day of our 2024 Dolomites Tour. Fallen trees, hail stones and ice cream, it's all go on a Columbus Tour 🤣. We go again in July, hopefully without the fallen trees and hail stones, but with amazing Italian ice cream 👍😋

Alps and Dolomites Grand Tour Day 7. Off to Lake Garda today and the day started with the possibility of some showers! As we headed away from the Dolomites the showers turned into what could only be described as a biblical storm of thunder, lightning and hail stones. We stopped to shelter from the worst of it and get our wet weather gear on. The storm lightened so we headed off only to come a cross a large tree across the road. Amazing efficiency from what we assumed was a forestry worker who turned up with chain saw in hand and dispatched the stricken tree in a matter of minutes. Off we go again and head to our first coffee stop to dry out a little. Onwards again towards Garda and the weather improved significantly upto a very pleasant 25 degrees. Lunch by the lake and then our last coffee stop which has a wonderful panoramic view of the lake. We have two nights at Lake Garda with the promise of lovely weather 👌

Day 3 Black Forest & Vosges Tour. Rest or ride out day today, Stuart decided to take a trip down to Lake Constance while the rest of the group opted for the Black Forest ride out. We waited for the local mist to clear and then headed off. Straight onto the B500 from our hotel and what an amazing piece of tarmac it is, smooth with flowing corners what a joy to start the day. We managed to dodgy the rain most of the day, with just the odd shower here and there, but not enough to dampen the spirits. Not a surprise considering the roads are just wonderful and the scenery is just stunning. Stuart reported an excellent run down to Lake Constance and our day finished with a fantastic meal in the hotel restaurant. Off to the Vosges tomorrow and its forecast to be sunny and 30 degrees. 🤞👍👌

Austrian and Swiss Alps Tour Day 6. We headed away from the Austrian Alps today and west towards Switzerland for the 2nd half of our tour. Glorious weather again today, we have been blessed on this tour with so much good weather, 🤞 it holds for the remaining time we are away. We tick off our 1st two Swiss passes with coffee on the Fluela Pass as our last stop before we arrive at our hotel for the evening. Traditional potato rosti was the main choice, Gordon went for the mussels which were apparently delicious. Further west across Switzerland tomorrow ticking off some more passes as we go. 😁👌🏍

Day 9 Spain and Portugal Tour. We are heading back into Spain today, but not before we ride some of the wonderfully quiet Portuguese roads. Riding north east we rejoin the banks of the Douro River riding on the west side of this natural border between Spain and Portugal, photo stops done and its on to our first coffee stop. We had perfect riding weather with temperature hovering around 25 all day and glorious blue skies. The final part of our route taking us through the Montesinho National Park and across into Spain for our overnight stay in a Parador hotel. A lovely evening meal of local delacies and conversation about the wide variety of roads ridden during the day and the Picos where we head tomorrow.

Off to the Vecours Region today famous for the balcony roads and the Comb Laval arch, but not before we had some fabulous roads to ride through the Jura region, Massif de Bauges and the Chartreuse National Park. Past Grenoble and onto our hotel for the next 2 night in the fabulous Vecours National Park. Ride out or rest day tomorrow, wonder which will be chosen 🤔

Austrian and Swiss Alps Tour Day 5. Most of the group elected to ride the amazing Grossglockner and why wouldn't you with the spectacular scenery and amazing biking road on offer. Splitting into smaller groups everyone went at their own pace stopping for photos and coffee when they felt like it. Then back to our hotel just before a massive thunderstorm came through.
