Simple ways to use less electricity at home
Does anyone else feel relieved when you look at your smart meter figures right now? We do! That’s why ATMOS’ Summer Savings campaign is all about using this time of year – when most people need less energy at home – to review electricity usage and think about reducing it. We’re sharing electricity saving tips each week so that when winter comes and you NEED to use more, you can be sure you’re being as financially savvy and environmentally friendly as possible. If you’re finding the tips useful, please do give us a like or a share so that others can benefit too 😊
This week we’re going back to basics: those small behaviour changes we can all make at home. They’re not groundbreaking and they’re not rocket science, however that doesn’t mean they’re always easy to do. Some say it takes 21 days to make a habit – so if you start making these changes now they could become automatic by the end of the month. Surely it’s worth a go?! Here are five simple ways to use less electricity at home…
1. Ditch standby mode – the majority of appliances and devices can be turned off at the plug without messing up their programming. This alone can save up to £60 a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust. If you’re unsure check the instruction manual. You could buy a smart plug which allows you to turn off several appliances and devices off at once, making this tip even easier to put into action.
2. Turn off the lights when you leave a room – again, so simple to do in theory but can take a bit of effort to consistently put into action. Remember the 21 day theory though and you’ll soon get there! Sensors for your lights are another way to help manage this.
3. Maximise the warmer weather to reduce your tumble dryer usage – use drying racks outside when you can, and move them inside when the weather doesn’t allow. Estimates vary but using your dryer can cost around £1.50 each time. It’s easy to see how that adds up over the weeks and months. If you do use your tumble dryer, make sure it’s for a full load.
4. Similarly, only running your dishwasher when it’s full will give you the best value out of each cycle. And why not cook bigger portions of meals, or multiple meals, and freeze the leftovers to make the most of the work your oven’s doing? Being super savvy in the kitchen can lead to some super savings in the long-run.
5. Finally, try to reduce your water usage. The planet will thank you for conserving precious water supplies, and your bank account will appreciate you spending less money on heating water. Only boil as much water as you need in your kettle and try to keep your shower time down to four minutes.
