Crete - An Island of History & Charm.

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea favouring a great climate year-round with the holiday season starting at the end of April through to October.

Although a well established Island Crete has a charm of it's own with something to offer everyone alongside it's many wonderful sandy beaches.

The Island is home to many Ancient Greek sites of interest such as the Palace of Knossos a Minoan site with close ties to the myth of Minotaur, Gortyna previously a Greco- Roman city, Ancient Aptera featuring an Ottoman Fortress and more.

Walking holidays in Crete generally cover the South coast beaches to the ancient towns of Lissos and Eleftherna, hike the Samaria Gorge, wandering through the olive groves and mountain villages you will see the traditional Cretan way of life.

Maybe you have read the novel The Island by Victoria Hislop which tells the story of life on Spinalonga an island situated off the coast of Elounda, a l***r colony until 1957.
The island is reached via a scenic boat trip from Elounda or the village of Plaka, a tour of the Island takes up to 2 hours, visit abandoned houses and the Church, the stone walls date back to the Venetians it really is a memorable experience and has been carefully maintained and restored over the years. Now becoming one of the most visited destinations in Greece.

If relaxation is more your thing head to the Elounda Bay Palace and Elounda Beach Hotels recently visited by Abi of Deben Travel and highly recommended.
The hotel situated on a sheltered bay in Elounda originally founded in 1971 to offer luxury accommodation and villas with private pools - very rare in Greece at that time which attracted many rich and famous guests.

Both hotels have since been awarded various accolades and continue to provide outstanding service in a wonderfully scenic and peaceful beach location.
With beautiful sea views from most of the rooms, suites and waterfront villas alongside rooms set in pretty well maintained gardens, there is a range of unique accommodations to suit couples and families who wish to spend quality time together.

A choice of indoor and outdoor swimming pools alongside four blue flag beaches which are shallow and sparkling turquoise in colour means plenty of space for everyone to play or just relax on the comfortable loungers in the sunshine.

Waterfront dining here is a treat from traditional Greek, Innovative Mediterranean cuisine, seafood and Italian. The sail bar is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail with a view of the sea. Entertainment is low key here with evenings spent listening to some live music and enjoying the company of your travelling companions.

The village of Elounda is a ten minute walk away or short taxi ride so everything is within easy reach for day excursions, boat trips across to Spinalonga, local waterfront tavernas and independent shops selling Cretan goods.
