Here is Worcester’s beautiful Old Palace 🏰✨

Built for the Bishop of Worcester in c.1200, during the reign of King John, the Old Palace has witnessed some of the most fascinating chapters in Worcester’s history.

👑 In 1575, Queen Elizabeth I and her council stayed at the palace during her visit to Worcester.

⚔️ Almost 70 years later, during the Civil War, the palace became the setting for a council of war. Worcester’s governor refused to surrender to Parliamentary forces, ultimately leading to the Siege of Worcester in 1646.

The building remained the official residence of the Bishop of Worcester until 1846, when it was sold to the Dean and Chapter of Worcester Cathedral for use as a school.

A beautiful building with over 800 years of history right at the heart of Worcester. ❤️

Celebrating Worcester's rich heritage of craftsmanship and skilled makers!

From delicate porcelain flower making and hand-painted fine detail at the Royal Worcester factory to traditional glove making, our city's working life has always been built on creativity, patience, and pride.

1️⃣ Doughty Flower Making Department at Royal Worcester: The flower makers had a long room in which almost a dozen flower makers made the individual petals and leaves and built them up into the complete flowers!

Ahead of the 375th anniversary of the Battle of Worcester, step back in time to 3rd September 1651, the epic showdown between Crown and Parliament that brought the English Civil War to an end. ⚔️👑

1️⃣ The Battle Map (1651): Detailed map by John Fawkes showing Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian troops surrounding King Charles II’s forces.

Cromwell called this victory a “Crowning Mercy”!

2️⃣ Smoke, Cannons & Cavalry Charges: 28,000 Parliamentarians clashed with 16,000 Royalists outside the city walls. This 1750 engraving by Barlow captures the intense chaos on the river banks.

3️⃣ The Royal Escape: After fierce hand-to-hand fighting, Charles II narrowly escaped, eventually hiding for six weeks before fleeing to France!

4️⃣ Fort Royal Park Today: Stand where history happened! Fort Royal Park offers sweeping views of Worcester as well as our spectacular Cathedral and features the memorial relief marking the key battle point above royalist headquarters, The Commandery.
