Malcolm & Mo Rowe

Bowling Directors

📆31st January 2027 - 13th March 2027

“We joined the Mercian Group in January 2023 and were immediately struck by what a wonderful opportunity it offered. As naturally sociable people with a shared love of sport, it felt like the perfect fit from the outset.” Malcolm has been playing bowls since the late 1980s and has enjoyed a long and successful career in the game. He has represented Devon at both Under-40 and senior levels, and during his time living in Cyprus, he even competed on the international stage. Today, he continues to play competitively with Plymouth North Down Bowls Club, maintaining the same passion and commitment he has always had.

Maureen, by contrast, approaches bowls from a more relaxed, social perspective. Before taking up the sport, she devoted many years to netball, not only as a player but also as an umpire and as Chair of both senior and junior leagues. During that time, she played a significant role in developing the junior section, helping to nurture the next generation of players.

“Since arriving at Don Pablo, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting involved in club life. From organising fun and friendly bowls matches to helping newcomers find their feet, it has been incredibly rewarding. Just as importantly, it has given us the chance to reconnect with old friends and make many new ones along the way.”

Andy & Hazel Eames

Bowling Directors

📆17th January 2027 - 30th January 2027

Andy Eames enjoyed a long and rewarding career in education, teaching at the local comprehensive school for 30 years. Upon retiring in 2010, he turned his energy towards bowls, quickly becoming a familiar and respected figure at his local club. Today, he serves as Greenkeeper, a role he takes great pride in, ensuring the playing surface is maintained to the highest standard. In addition, Andy remains an active player, regularly representing the club in league fixtures and friendly matches, while also organising popular “roll-ups” that bring members together in a relaxed and sociable setting.

His involvement in mind sports is equally impressive. Andy began playing bridge in 2002 and has since become a central figure within his club, serving as Chairman for the past ten years. His steady leadership and commitment have helped the club to thrive.

Hazel built her career working as a carer in several residential homes for the elderly, where she developed outstanding organisational skills and a compassionate, practical approach to supporting others. She now brings that valuable experience to her work with Mercian. Since retiring, Hazel has embraced a wide range of interests. She enjoys researching and compiling the family tree, immersing herself in books, and following television series, particularly crime dramas and popular soaps. A keen quiz enthusiast, she also relishes testing her knowledge whenever she can. Above all, she treasures her role as “Nanny,” spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren, who remain at the heart of her busy and fulfilling life.

Eddie & Cathy Williams

Bridge Directors

📆17th January 2027 - 13th February 2027

Kathy and Eddie Williams first met over a bridge table, a fitting beginning to a partnership that has now spanned more than fifty years, both in life and in the game they love. Each has enjoyed a long and distinguished involvement in bridge, including many years serving on the panel of English Bridge Union Tournament Directors.

Away from the table, they share a busy and rewarding family life. Between them, they have five children and are proud grandparents to four lively young grandchildren, who happily keep them occupied with regular babysitting duties.

They have also been part of our team in the past, so it is an absolute pleasure to welcome them back. Their experience, warmth, and enthusiasm make them a valued addition once again.

📆1st November 2026 - 29th November 2026

Gayle and Colin first discovered their love of bridge back in the 1970s, and it has remained a central part of their lives ever since. Ken & Christine Johnston

Bowling Directors

📆1st November 2026 - 29th November 2026

📆14th March 2027 - 21st March 2027

Bridge Directors

📆14th February 2027 - 21st March 2027

Ken has been devoted to the game of Bridge since 1975 and took up Bowls in 1983. Over the years, he has risen to represent his County in both disciplines, competing at the highest levels and securing every major trophy available. Remarkably, his competitive spirit shows no sign of fading. He continues to play Bowls at his local club, where he is still in pursuit of a milestone achievement, his twentieth Men’s Club Championship. Alongside his playing career, Ken remains actively involved in the administration of the game. He serves on the English Bridge Union Tournament Director panel and regularly officiates at both club and national events.

Christine began playing Bowls in 2000 and quickly established herself as a strong competitor at County level. Her success at club level is equally impressive, having won the Ladies Club Championship on six occasions. Notably, four of those victories coincided with Ken’s own championship wins, highlighting their shared passion and success. She has also been playing Bridge since 1998 and is now a qualified Club Tournament Director. In addition to her sporting accomplishments, Christine speaks fluent Spanish, a skill that proves particularly valuable during their travels abroad.
