5 Fabulous things to do this week in York...
1. Take a river boat cruise. There are a number of cruises available where you can sit in or out, have a dining experience and travel by day or evening, so head to Kings Staith where most of them pick up/drop off, and take your pick.
2. Explore the open spaces. Museum gardens has the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, a river view, and the Yorkshire Museum, or explore Rowntree's Park where you can stop at the coffee shop. Both are pretty central, and free to explore.
3. Eat Al Fresco. Even with the changeable English weather York is well equipped for eating outside with plenty of restaurants with garden space too. Try the Exhibition on Bootham or The Star in The City.
4. Shop independent. York has many independent traders with unique gifts and clothes as well as some of the chains you also know and love. You'll find unique jewellery stores in Stonegate and the Shambles, as well as interesting Harry Potteresque stores.

Favourite (and Free) things to do in York
We all know that it's expensive when you're away on holiday, so we've found some fabulous things to do in our amazing city that won't cost the earth.
1. Visit the historic Shambles, and it's market. Now home to a number of Harry Potteresque shops, and various gift shops, this street was once famous for its butcher's shops and houses that extended out above so those in opposite houses could shake hands across the road. It's well worth a look.
2. The National Railway Museum. Free to enter, it's a full day out for any train enthusiast, but also for those interested in history, and an interactive experience.
3. The Museum gardens. Centrally located, and free to enter, the ruins of St Mary's Abbey can be explored, as well as the city's Art Gallery and you can take a picnic to the extensive gardens. Don't be surprised if you see the odd Viking wandering through too!
4. Walk the City walls. You can do the full city walls if you'd like, or just sections of it. Expect fantastic views of the city, and the Minster along the way.

The wait for Colour & Light 2025 at is over! 💥

You can now see the looped 10 minute show celebrating York’s beautiful wildlife, every night from 6-9pm on the South Transept of York Minster, until 2nd March.

It’s completely free, no booking or tickets are required and you’re encouraged to watch it a few times as we guarantee you’ll see something new every time you do.

To ensure this event is accessible to all, we have a dedicated quiet hour from 8-9pm every night. Seating is also available for people who will benefit.
