22 YEARS SINCE HURRICANE IVAN — SEPTEMBER 7, 2004 🕯️🇬🇩

Today, Grenada remembers one of the most devastating days in our modern history.

On September 7, 2004, Hurricane Ivan tore across Grenada as a powerful Category 3 hurricane, leaving destruction on a scale that many Grenadians will never forget.

Around 90% of homes were damaged or destroyed, with thousands of people displaced. Schools, churches, businesses, government buildings and vital infrastructure suffered enormous damage, while the agriculture and tourism industries were hit incredibly hard.

The hurricane claimed the lives of 39 people in Grenada and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.

One of the biggest blows was to Grenada’s famous nutmeg industry. Trees that had taken years to mature were destroyed in just a few hours, leaving many families without their livelihoods.

But Hurricane Ivan is also a story of Grenadian strength and resilience. 🇬🇩

Communities came together. Homes were rebuilt. Businesses reopened. Crops were replanted. Families started again.

22 years later, we remember those who lost their lives, those who lost their homes and livelihoods, and everyone who lived through a day that changed Grenada forever.
