Check out scouts new tiller! 🎉

Redesign of the steering system…

We have finally got round to a job we’ve been meaning to do for awhile.

The steering system originally consisted of a quadrant which was attached to the rudder by wires which were all led above deck and seemed way overcomplicated to us as well as a trap for loose ropes or fingers! It also fell off as soon you tried to lift the Rudder which was a bit inconvenient to say the least!

We removed the old tiller and quadrant and built a new longer tiller which now attached directly to the rudder head. This allows for full steering even with the rudder half up. and should make the steering feel much more direct.

Scout first time leaving Carriacou since before hurricane beryl, and Andy’s too! They left for Grenada down the windward side for more breeze. Scout had no issues other than a bolt on the main sheet pad eye snapping. She’s made of strong stuff! They spent a few days celebrating their voyage in hog island, Grenada 🍻 then headed back along the west coast in a steady 20kn breeze. Ivan has decide to change the tiller lay out, he headed back in to the workshop apon his return to carriacou to get to work on the new tiller… more on that later.

Little video update of our week..

Slight distraction this week with a little hospital visit for Lola… But we managed to get the rigging together, including setting up the boom and furling system.

We had problems with running the lines inside the boom it took a very long time to get right. Ivan managed to buy the boom here in carriacou from a hurricane damaged boat, thought it was slightly short, he managed to extend it by adding a carbon sleeve. Scouts boom ended up under the boat during the hurricane and was bent beyond repair.

A lot of the furling system got bent during the hurricane, Amazingly we managed to buy all the matching bits that were damaged to scouts system in carriacou, from other damaged boats. We did have to buy a new forstay from Grenada.

HUGE day for Scout!! Her mast is back up, a year and a half since she was blow out of the sea!
