Most visitors see the two churches at Ananuri that are enclosed within the fortress walls โ but the original complex actually had three. This is the third church, Mkurnali ('Healer').
It dates from the late 16th or early 17th century, making it older than both Ghvtaeba Church (mid-17th century) and the grand Church of the Mother of God (1689). The little bell tower was added in the 17th century.
If you walk a little ways down the road that runs alongside the main complex, you will see the ruins peeking up above the trees. As a bonus, there is a great little cafe on this road (Cafรฉ Ananuri), and you might be able to find a free carpark on the street too. Otherwise, parking at the fortress costs 5 GEL.
