Okunoshima, or Rabbit Island, is a super fun and unique spot off the coast of Hiroshima, famous for its hundreds of friendly wild rabbits that love attention and snacks from visitors. The island is small (about 4km around), so you can easily explore it on foot or by renting a bike from the main hotel. Besides the adorable bunnies, Okunoshima has a fascinating WWII history, including old army ruins and a Poison Gas Museum you can check out.

The best and easiest way to visit is as a day trip from Hiroshima. Just take a train (or bus) to Mihara, switch to the JR Kure Line to Tadanoumi Station, then walk 5 minutes to Tadanoumi Port and catch the ferry - round trip ferry tickets cost about 620 yen, and the ride is only 15 minutes. You can buy rabbit food at the port (about 200 yen per bag), and it’s a good idea to bring some veggies like cabbage, too. The island has a hotel, a couple of cafes, and a souvenir shop, but not many other shops, so plan ahead for snacks and drinks.

Plan for at least 3-4 hours to enjoy the island, feed bunnies, walk or bike around, visit the museum, and relax by the sea. It’s a quirky, cute, and memorable experience-perfect for animal lovers and those looking for something different in Japan!
