Zurtaketi Kurgan Field — A Bronze Age City of the Dead.

On the Gomareti Plateau near Dmanisi, archaeologists discovered a remarkable group of burial mounds dating back around 3,700 years.

So far, 9 kurgans have been excavated. Their sizes vary, with the largest reaching up to 100 meters in diameter.

At the center of these massive stone or earth-and-stone structures were burial chambers made of stone. The largest chamber covered up to 150 m² and was connected by stone corridors known as dromos. Ritual roads led to the kurgans, emphasizing their ceremonial significance.

The walls of the chambers and corridors reveal ancient petroglyphs — around 250 schematic symbols depicting animals, birds, reptiles, hunting scenes, geometric patterns, and mysterious parallel lines.

Artifacts found inside include gold and silver items, ceramics, carnelian beads, and obsidian arrowheads — all characteristic of the Trialeti culture.

This reconstruction is based on real location photography and the sketches of archaeologist Goderdzi Narimanishvili.
