Dashbashi has two halves: the Diamond Bridge on top, the Weeping Wall at the bottom 💧

This is Tsalka Canyon — officially listed as Tsalka (Dashbash) Canyon, a natural monument the Khrami river cut through an old volcanic plateau. The glass bridge and the diamond-shaped café hanging in its middle are what everyone photographs. The river at the bottom is the part you only see on foot. 🌿

The trail drops from the rim all the way down to the water, past a line of waterfalls spilling down the green canyon walls. Allow an hour to an hour and a half there and back. Going down is the easy half — the steep climb back up is where the real effort is. 🥾

Gudauri with kids: the quads, the horses, and what to pack when it looks like this 🌫️

This is the Friendship Monument with the cloud sitting right on the panorama. Paragliding waits for clear, settled air — the horses and the quads are the ground-level side of Gudauri, and the side children can actually join. 🐎

It's 2,384 metres up here, so pack for it even when Tbilisi is warm. September days at Gudauri sit around the mid-teens and drop sharply once the sun goes, and on a day like this a proper jacket earns its place in the bag. 🧥

Uplistsikhe has almost no shade — so the hour you arrive decides the whole visit ☀️

Georgia's oldest cave town is carved into an open rock ridge above the Mtkvari valley, and out on the stone there's nowhere to hide from the sun. The only real shade on the whole site is inside the caves. In September, midday up here is hard going. 🪨

The usual advice is to go early — but the gates don't open until 10:00, so early means being there at opening, not at sunrise. The other good window is late afternoon, when the heat eases and the low sun cuts across the carved walls and picks out every edge. And check the wind: a breezy day in Tbilisi or Gori can be properly gusty up on the ridge. 🌬️

When to go, when to skip 👇

✅ Late afternoon — softer heat and low light across the rock
❌ Midday — almost no shade anywhere outside the caves

At Heshkili in Svaneti the café sits at 1,900 m — and this is the view from the table ☕

Heshkili is an old hamlet about seven kilometres above Mestia, up the road that climbs toward Hatsvali. It's family-run: wooden huts on an open slope, a garden, an outdoor fireplace and a small kitchen doing Svan cooking. The clouds come over the ridge and reshape the whole valley while you're still finishing your plate. 🏔️

Svan food is its own cuisine, not a mountain version of what you eat in Tbilisi. Svaneti is the only region in Georgia with its own seasoned salt — svanuri marili, blended from cumin, coriander, fennel, red pepper and garlic — and it goes into nearly everything that comes out of the kitchen. 🧂

What to look for on a Svan menu 👇
🥧 Kubdari — yeasted bread sealed around hand-chopped spiced meat, baked so the juices run back into the crust. On Georgia's intangible cultural heritage list since 2015
🧀 Chvishtari — cornbread kneaded through with sulguni and pan-fried. Best eaten the day it's made
🥔 Tashmijabi — potato and cheese worked together until it stretches. The longer the stretch, the better it's been made
🍞 Fetvraal — khachapuri with millet flour worked into the cheese filling
🧀 Narchvi — a Svan cheese pressed under stones for anywhere from three months to a year

One thing to ask before you order: kubdari is filled with beef, pork or a mix of the two depending on the kitchen. Chvishtari, tashmijabi and the cheeses are all meat-free.

Jvari and Svetitskhoveli are in the same frame here — and 400 years apart ⛪

The church on the ridge is Jvari, put up between 586 and 605 above the point where the Aragvi meets the Mtkvari. Four centuries later, down in the town, Svetitskhoveli was rebuilt in stone between 1010 and 1029 by the architect Arsukisdze, commissioned by Catholicos Melchisedec I. Both carry the same UNESCO listing — the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta, inscribed in 1994. 🏛️

What catches people out is the town itself. Mtskheta was the capital of the kingdom of Iberia from roughly the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD, and it never stopped being the religious centre — it's still the seat of the Georgian church today. Svetitskhoveli was the largest church in the whole country until Tbilisi's Sameba Cathedral was consecrated in 2004. ⛪

In Kazbegi you can ride a horse up to Gergeti Trinity Church — up one trail, down another 🐎

It starts in Stepantsminda, the town at 1,740 metres on the Terek river. A short briefing, riding instructions, a helmet, and then you're climbing a natural mountain trail toward the church that sits at 2,170 metres above the valley. Mount Kazbek is to the west of you the entire way up. 🏔️

The return goes a different way, dropping back down the mountain road, so you see the same valley twice from two completely different lines. About two and a half hours all in, including the time you spend at the church. The horses live on this terrain and know it. 🐎

Gudauri has three summer activities at the Friendship Monument. Most people book the short one 🏔️

Horse riding at the monument is a ten-minute ride. That's what's waiting where the cars pull in, and it's fine — but if you wanted an actual trail ride through the valleys, that has to be arranged ahead through an agency. Same activity, completely different day. 🐎

Paragliding has the same split. Operators wait at the monument and along the road about a kilometre uphill from the petrol station, and a launch from beside the monument gives you a short hop. Ask instead for a thermic flight from the top of the gondola — more altitude, far more ground covered, longer in the air. It's the same price bracket and a different experience. 🪂

Dashbashi Canyon works for families because nobody has to do the scary part 🌉

The Diamond Bridge is 240 metres of glass strung across the canyon, sitting about 280 metres above the floor, with a diamond-shaped café hanging from the highest point of it — reported as the largest and tallest suspended structure of its kind, and submitted to Guinness World Records. Walking across it is the whole experience, and it asks nothing of you except nerve. 💎

Everything else is optional and paid separately. The sky bike sends you across the canyon on a bicycle strapped to a wire. The giant swing throws you out over the drop. One person in the family does them, the rest watch from the bridge — which, honestly, is the better seat anyway. 🚲

Gudauri in September: the cloud arrives, the ridge disappears, and the wind doesn't stop ☁️

This is what the mountain does. At the start of the month the sky here is overcast or mostly cloudy around 18% of the time. By the end of September that figure has more than doubled, to roughly 39%. The Friendship Monument sits at 2,384 metres, well above the Gudauri plateau, right on the lip of the Devil's Valley — high enough that it builds its own weather while Tbilisi stays in sunshine. 🏔️

People treat a day like this as a wasted trip. It isn't. Cloud moving at that speed across a ridgeline is a thing you don't get to see at sea level, and the odds are still with you anyway — an average September day up here still gives you about fifteen hours where the sky is clear or only partly clouded. 🌬️

Old Tbilisi: everything in this frame is free, except one cable car that costs 2.5 GEL 🏛️

People budget for a capital city and then find out the capital doesn't charge them. Narikala Fortress has free admission and no closing time — the first citadel went up on that ridge around 364 AD, and most of the walls you're looking at were built by the Arab emirs in the 8th century. The Mongols are the ones who named it Narin Qala, the Little Fortress. 🏰

Five minutes along the ridge stands Kartlis Deda, twenty metres of aluminium raised in 1958 for the city's 1,500th birthday. She holds a bowl of w**e in one hand for friends and a sword in the other for enemies. That's the whole national character in one statue, and it costs nothing to stand in front of. 🍷
