HOMOWO FESTIVAL-WHEN THE GA PEOPLE LAUGH AT HUNGER
We’re kicking off The Party Crew’s Festival Month with one of Ghana’s most significant cultural celebrations - Homowo Festival. 🇬🇭
Celebrated by the Ga people of the Greater Accra Region, Homowo literally means “hooting at hunger.” The festival traces its roots to a period of severe famine experienced by the Ga people. When the rains returned and a plentiful harvest followed, the people celebrated their victory over hunger and that celebration became Homowo.
But Homowo is much more than a colourful festival.
It is a celebration of resilience, gratitude, community, heritage and abundance.
Before the festivities begin, traditional communities observe a period of silence and a ban on drumming and noise-making. As the season progresses, important traditions take place, including the preparation of kpokpoi, a traditional maize dish, and the sprinkling of the food during Kpashimo.. a symbolic act of mocking the hunger that the ancestors overcame.
And then comes the celebration!
The silence gives way to drumming, dancing, traditional processions, colourful clothing, food, reunions and community celebrations! bringing generations together to honour their heritage.
