History Lesson:
Kwame Nkrumah was a Ghanaian revolutionary and statesman who led the Gold Coast to independence from British rule in 1957, becoming its first Prime Minister and then the first President of Ghana. A fervent advocate of Pan-Africanism, Nkrumah was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and promoted African unity and decolonization. After his political career in the United States and Britain, he returned to his homeland to form the Convention People’s Party (CPP), which gained widespread support and paved the way for Ghana’s self-rule. His administration focused on national development, industrialization, and promoting a unified African culture

On a recent journey with our beautiful group from the U.S., we visited the Nkyinkyim Museum in Ada Foah—and discovered a story that deserves to be felt, not just told.

At the heart of the museum is the Ancestor Project, a powerful installation by Ghanaian sculptor Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, honouring African ancestors who were kidnapped, imprisoned, forced into slavery, or lost during the Middle Passage.

Each sculpture carries a face.
Each face carries a story.
And every story connects us to a past that shaped the world we live in today. ✊🏾

The name Nkyinkyim comes from the Adinkra symbol meaning twisting, turning, and adaptability—a powerful reflection of the journeys our ancestors made and the resilience they carried.

Did you know the ₵ symbol on your cedi note is shaped like a seashell? 🐚

Long before coins and paper money, Ghana traded in cowry shells — glossy, porcelain-like shells brought from the Indian Ocean by Arab traders. Back then, cowries weren’t just currency. They were status. Wealth. Power. To hold cowries was to hold prestige.

That history never left us. The word “cedi” comes from sedie — the Akan word for cowry shell. And when Ghana broke away from the British colonial monetary system in July 1965 and introduced the cedi as our first national currency, we didn’t just create new money — we carried our heritage into it. Even the ₵ symbol was deliberately stylized to mimic the graceful curve of a cowry shell.

Every time we spend a cedi, we’re spending a piece of our history. 🇬🇭
