African Spirituality and Traditional Religion Tour with

In Akom cosmology, ancestor veneration is not worship of the dead. It is the recognition, honoring, and communion with the living lineage of spirits who have transitioned but remain active within the moral and spiritual order of the family and the land. 🌿
To understand it properly in Akom, we must look at how existence is structured.
1. The Cosmic Order in Akom
Akom sees reality as a layered spiritual continuum under Nyame (ONYAME/ONYAMEKESE).
Within this order exist:
Nyame (The Supreme Source) – creator and ultimate authority
Abosom – divine forces or spiritual intelligences that govern aspects of nature and destiny
Nananom Nsamanfoɔ (Ancestors) – righteous departed elders of the lineage
The Living Community – those currently on earth
The Unborn – future lineage
Ancestor veneration is therefore the maintenance of the bridge between the living and the righteous departed.
2. Who Becomes an Ancestor in Akom?
Not every deceased person becomes an ancestor.
A true ancestor must:
Have lived with moral integrity
Have fulfilled responsibilities to family and community
Have received proper funeral rites
Be accepted spiritually by the lineage
Such spirits become Nananom Nsamanfoɔ — honored elders in the spirit world.
They are not gods, but guiding elders.
3. The Purpose of Ancestor Veneration
Ancestor veneration in Akom serves several functions:
Spiritual Continuity
It acknowledges that life does not end with physical death.
Moral Guidance
Ancestors guard the ethical order of the family and community.
Protection
They watch over descendants and intervene in times of danger.
Memory Preservation
Veneration ensures that lineage history and identity are not lost.
Spiritual Balance
It maintains harmony between the physical and spiritual realms.
4. How Ancestors Communicate
Ancestors may communicate through:
Dreams
Divination
Ritual invocation
Mediumship through Akomfo (priests/priestesses)
Symbolic signs in daily life
They are not constantly called, but invited respectfully when necessary.
5. What Ancestors Receive
During veneration, offerings symbolize reciprocity, not feeding spirits literally.
Common offerings include:
Water (purity and life)
Schnapps or palm wine (libation)
Food prepared in unity
Prayer and spoken remembrance
The most important offering is respectful remembrance.
6. What Ancestor Veneration Is Not
Within Akom cosmology, ancestor veneration is not:
Idol worship
Necromancy
Spirit summoning for entertainment
Worship equal to Nyame
It is a moral and spiritual relationship with lineage elders.
7. The Deeper Akom Understanding
In Akom philosophy, the human being is never isolated.
A person stands within:
The ancestors behind them
The community beside them
The unborn ahead of them
Ancestor veneration is therefore the act of standing consciously within that continuum.
