These mysterious prehistoric rock carvings are the most recent archeological discovery in Ghana’s North East Region. Who created them? How old are they? What were their purpose? Art? Ritual? Archeologists from the University of Ghana and the museums and Monuments Board are currently investigating.

This very unique location is the confluence (coming together) of the Red Volta and White Volta Rivers just north of Bongbini in Ghana’s North East Region. The difference in the two streams’ colors is due to the different sediment that erodes from the land they pass through on their journey south from Burkina Faso.
In the next few years, this confluence will be gone, submerged by the White Volta Lake to be created by ’s new Pwalugu Dam project downstream. Go and visit it while you can!

The White Volta River has an incredible “horseshoe bend” that many don’t know about simply because its scale is only visible from the air. This unique peninsular formation is located just a kilometer north of the road to Kpaksinkpɜa in Ghana’s North East Region. Monuments. Swipe to see map view.

When digging pits for clay to build their homes, the people of Yikpabongo and other nearby villages in Ghana’s North East Region occasionally dug up clay statuettes in the ground. Some were of people others of animals, occasionally even a person riding an animal! The locals dubbed them “kronkronbua” which means “Olden Days Children” in Koma.

Little is known about the people who made the figurines. They have no connection with the current inhabitants of the region. What ultimately happened to the Koma figurine makers is unknown.

Stunning aerial view of the at Gingana in Ghana’s North East Region. Prehistoric rock paintings were documented by archeologists at this site in 2004. As recently as last year, more rock art discoveries were made and are currently being researched by the Ghana Board of Museums and Monuments.

Visit any rural community in Ghana’s North East Region and you’re likely to see these interesting structures. These are two types of granaries used to store grain harvest during the dry season. The first mud granary is known in Mampruli as a “buuri” and the second image is of a woven thatch granary called a “napoo.” The thatch roof on both styles is lifted off to load or remove the grain stored inside. Today, these unique structures are disappearing as more people are storing grain in factory-made plastic & canvas bags in zinc-roofed rooms.

The Arrival of a Troupe of Mossi Traders in Walewale, Aug 1888.

This engraving was made by famed artist Edouard Riou (who illustrated Jules Verne’s fantastical novels) for Captain Louis Gustave Binger’s 1892 book “Du Niger au Golfe de Guinée par le pays de Kong et le Mossi”. There are several illustrations from Mamprugu based on Capt. Binger’s sketches and notes.

Cpt. Binger was the third European known to enter the kingdom of . The French explorer traveled south from to and became ill along the way. After crossing the White Volta River, he was forced to stop for about six weeks in in August and September 1888 to recover.⠀

Nalerigu’s famous NaJeringa Defense Wall was built nearly 300 years ago to defend the capital. The ruins of this wall still stand today.

NaJeringa (Naa Gyɛriŋŋa) was a Mamprusi king who reigned around 1740-1752. He was the son of NaAtabia (Naa Atabiya) who is known for moving the chieftaincy from Gambaga to Nalerigu.
