Why IELTS and Who Writes It?
If you have, at any time, questioned why you are required to write IELTS. After all, the English language has been your medium of instruction in school and your primary language. I hope this thread explains why you write the IELTS test.
Firstly, IELTS is an international standardized test of English Language to demonstrate your proficiency. There are other proficiency examinations, but IELTS is the most popular. You will be required to take the IELTS test if the institution, organisation or country you are applying to, sets the test as one of their entry requirements. Hence, IELTS is not mandatory, it is based on the requirement.
The IELTS test is taken by people who want to attend university in an English-speaking country (if required by the institution), as well as for immigration purposes and career opportunities.
Secondly, people may assume you only have to take the IELTS if you are a non-English speaking person from a foreign country, whose native language is not English. This is not an accurate assumption.
When you think about gaining entry to Canada through the Express Entry application, native English speaking individual from the UK, who wants to apply for a visa to enter Canada, must sit for, take, and pass the IELTS exam, even though they are from an English speaking country.

You only need to take IELTS when it is part of the requirement to apply for a visa. You will need to contact the institution, organisation or embassy you are applying to, to confirm if you will need to take the test.
Regarding passing IELTS, there is no pass or fail in IELTS. You are graded on your performance in the test, using band scores from 1–9 for each part of the test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Your results from the four parts then produce an overall band score.
Although there is no pass or fail in IELTS, Institutions and organisations have their score requirement which is not influenced by IELTS in any way.
Having said all that, if you want to migrate via study or PR, please do your research or contact the institution you are applying to, to know if you are required to take the IELTS test.
