African Union condemns coup attempt in Niger - The African Union has condemned what it called an attempt to seize power by force in Niger, after mutinous soldiers attacked key sites in the capital, including the presidential palace and state television.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he followed “with concern” the events of the night of 28–29 August 2026 in Niamey, marked by armed clashes, casualties and major damage. He “strongly condemns the use of violence and any attempt to seize power by force.”
Youssouf rejected any change of government by force, called on all sides to show restraint, and urged them to protect civilians and keep the country stable. He offered condolences to the families of those killed and wished the wounded a speedy recovery. The AU also repeated its readiness to support efforts to restore constitutional order.
What happened
Niger’s Ministry of Defence said the army thwarted a mutiny that began at Air Base 101, inside Niamey’s international airport complex. Rebels then attacked other sensitive sites, including the presidential palace and the national television station. Broadcasts were cut for a time. Loyalist forces later said they had regained control.
Media reports put the death toll at about five, including three presidential guards, according to Niger’s state news agency. An official full casualty list has not been released.
The unrest was the most serious internal military challenge to General Abdourahamane Tiani since the 2023 coup. Tiani had not spoken publicly in the first days after the fighting.
The AU statement stops short of taking sides in Niger’s internal power struggle. Its message is simple: no seizure of power by the gun, protect civilians, and keep the country from sliding further into chaos.
