Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a major regulatory overhaul to strengthen the oversight of immigration and citizenship consultants.

The updated framework expands the authority of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) to curb fraud and protect vulnerable applicants.

The core changes under the new regulations include:

Tougher Penalties: The CICC will have enhanced disciplinary powers to issue stiffer fines and sanctions against rules-breaking or dishonest consultants.

Fraud Compensation Fund: A formalized compensation fund will be established to provide financial remedy to clients who suffer losses due to consultant misconduct or fraud.

Increased Federal Oversight: The Minister of Immigration will gain the authority to intervene and appoint an individual to assume board duties if the CICC board fails to meet its responsibilities.

Clearer Investigations: Misconduct investigation and reporting processes are being clarified to ensure uniform, consistent enforcement across the industry.

Expanded Public Register: Beginning April 2027, the CICC public register will display expanded information, including consultant complaint histories and disciplinary records, allowing applicants to verify their representatives more effectively.

The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has taken note of information circulating in the media regarding the alleged shortage of passport booklets in Spain.

The GID clarifies that this information is inaccurate and misleading and appears to be intended to create a negative impression of the ongoing efforts to assist Gambian migrants in Spain in obtaining necessary documentation.

The biometric enrolment team in Spain does not have any passport booklets in their possession. Their sole mandate is to provide enrolment services. Upon completion, all passport application files processed in Spain and Italy will be printed in the Gambia. For clarity, we can confirm that there is adequate stock of biometric passport booklets in the Gambia to print all applications.

Since the process began on Monday, 27th April 2026, immigration staff in Spain have been providing services with professionalism, diligence, and respect for the applicants. We acknowledge the high demand for passports in Spain, but such demand does not impede our ongoing quest to provide relevant services.

The GID reaffirms its commitment to service, and urge all Gambians to remain in contact with the Public Relations Office to avoid misinformation and sabotage to the efforts of the government to better serve its population.

The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) wishes to inform the general public, particularly Gambians residing in the Kingdom of Spain, that the Government of The Gambia has granted approval for the deployment of a Mobile Biometric Passport Enrolment Team to the Kingdom of Spain from 𝟮𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

This development follows the Government’s commitment to provide documentation services to Gambians as part of a national undertaking under the Spanish amnesty programme to regularise the status of 500,000 undocumented migrants.

As in previous missions, interested applicants are urged to make a non-refundable payment of 120 Euros through the digital platform using the link: https://shopgov.zetesft.com/stepfactory.aspx?AGNT=1799. Alternatively, payments can be made in person through a Banco Sabadell account, with 𝑩𝑩𝑨𝑵: 𝑬𝑺7400811533020001264734.

Upon completion of payment, applicants are urged to visit any of the specified enrolment centres according to the schedule attached below with their payment receipts for processing. All fresh applicants are required to attach relevant documents such as their birth certificates or ID cards, as well as their parents’ supporting documents (PSD). For renewals, a copy of the expired passport will suffice.

The GID wishes to extend its appreciation to the Government of The Gambia for the approval, while assuring all Gambians that applications will undergo rigorous documentation procedures in alignment with immigration laws and regulations to safeguard the integrity of national documents.
