The Gambia has strengthened its reputation as one of Africa’s top coastal tourism destinations after three of its beaches—Fajara, Kololi, and Kotu—received the prestigious Pediatricians’ Green Flag 2026, an international certification awarded to beaches that meet high standards for family safety, environmental sustainability, accessibility, cleanliness, and child-friendly services.
The recognition was announced by the Ministry of Tourism and highlights the country’s continued efforts to improve the quality of its tourism infrastructure while promoting responsible and sustainable beach management. The Green Flag certification evaluates beaches based on a wide range of criteria, including water quality, environmental protection measures, emergency services, accessibility for families and people with disabilities, and the availability of facilities that make beaches safe and enjoyable for children.
The Gambia emerged as one of the biggest winners in this year’s awards, with three of the six African beaches receiving the certification located within the country. Tanzania secured two certified beaches, while Tunisia received one, placing The Gambia at the forefront of family-friendly coastal tourism on the continent.
Tourism officials described the achievement as an important milestone that reinforces the country’s international image as a safe, welcoming, and environmentally conscious destination. They noted that the recognition is expected to further boost visitor confidence, attract more family travelers, and support the government’s strategy of expanding sustainable tourism while protecting the country’s natural coastal resources.
The award also reflects ongoing collaboration between government institutions, tourism stakeholders, local communities, and environmental agencies to maintain high standards across The Gambia’s beaches. Officials expressed optimism that the recognition will contribute to increased international visibility and strengthen the tourism sector, which remains one of the country's most important sources of employment and economic growth.
