In Georgetown (McCarthy Island), you’ll find The Slave Dungeon, an underground confinement spot where the most aggressive and stubborn enslaved Africans were jailed. The sole purpose of keeping them there was to break them down. By the time the enslaved were ready to be shipped to their various destinations, the enslavers hoped they’d be broken and more ready to comply with instructions.

Kapok or Silk cotton trees are native to west Africa and they play a very important role in the socioeconomic lives of the Senegambian people. For example, it is popular among fishermen because of the belief that a boat made of kapok doesn’t sink. You’ll recognize the tree from its “elephant-like” branches and trunk. It’ll be a sight!
