The title of the exhibition draws inspiration from a book (Traité de pathologie exotique), found in the library of the house that hosts it. Its content reflects the perception that dominated medical science as early as the 19th century about diseases that were mainly located in European colonies and which, although described and analyzed scientifically, are at the same time presented as mysterious and inexplicable: medicine in the service of the construction of "exotic" other.
At the same time, the concept of maladie as a "creative disease" is idealized in European art and literature as a source of artistic and emotional deepening and contributes decisively to the creation of the artist-shaman who "discovers great truths or new spiritual worlds". The artistic subject acquires corresponding "exotic" properties which construct an almost stereotypical identity. Modernism will reinforce the idea of a coherent, autonomous "exotic" self.
In the postmodern era, artistic identity is not singular or unitary, but rather composed of multiple, sometimes conflicting elements, questioning the notion of a coherent self and emphasizing its fluid, constructed nature. By embracing fragmentation, artists challenge traditional notions of identity, offering richer, more nuanced representations of the self.
The participating artists emanate from different geographic and cultural locations and, as such, can be seen as “carriers” of these differing social representations.
The invitation is for the viewer or audience to form their own connections to such varied experiences and narratives.
