Agios Nikolaos (pronounced Eye- os Nikol -owse, NOT Ag.Nik!) is a cosmopolitan resort which caters to many nationalities and the days of bar culture and night clubs were left behind 10 years ago, despite what you may read in other reviews. The lake and harbour area is the focal point of the town and legend says that the goddess Athena once bathed in the "bottomless" lake Voulismeni. Surrounded by mountains and with magnificent views of the Gulf of Mirabello, the town boasts a wide selection of traditional and contemporary restaurants and tavernas and cafe bars around the harbour are the perfect place to watch the world go by. The recently built marina has hosted several major yachting events in the last two years and is now the focus for art and music festivals which take place throughout the summer. A wide variety of organised and individually guided excursions are available and the area of eastern Crete enjoys more days of sunshine per year than any other part of Europe.

The shelter afforded by the two small islands of Fanaria and Agie Pantes have seen the area used as a safe harbour since Dorian times, when the town was the port for the city of Lato. During the Venetian occupation a large fortress was built where the Regional Council offices now stand. It was damaged several times by earthquakes over the years but finally demolished during WW2 to make way for the new offices. The name given to the fortress was "Mirabello", meaning "beautiful view" and the gulf which Agios Nikolaos lies on is still known by this name.
The main feature of the town is Lake Voulismeni, meaning "smelly lake", which it was, when landlocked and stagnant before a passage was cut from the lake to the sea in the late 19th century. The bridge crossing this cutting is a focal point and meeting place for residents and visitors alike. Tourist information is near the bridge.
