A Fortress of Strength
Spinalonga’s strategic location made it a military stronghold for centuries. After being abandoned due to Arab raids in the 7th century, it was revived in the 16th century when the Venetians fortified it to defend the Elounda harbour. By 1630, they had constructed a formidable sea fortress with towering walls and 35 cannons, making it nearly impossible to conquer. Today, much of this fortification remains intact—one of the best-preserved examples of Venetian military architecture in the Mediterranean.
From Ottoman Refuge to Greek Territory
The island later fell under Ottoman rule following the Venetian defeat in the 17th century. The Ottomans expanded the settlement, and by 1881 Spinalonga housed over 1,100 residents. During the Cretan Revolt (1866–1869), many Ottoman families sought refuge there. After Crete gained autonomy in 1903, Spinalonga was reclaimed by the Cretans, ushering in its most poignant chapter.
The L***r Colony
In 1903, Spinalonga became a l***r colony—one of the last in Europe. Misunderstood and stigmatized, leprosy patients were sent here in isolation. Yet, amidst the fear and hardship, a vibrant community formed. Residents established shops, schools, even a café. Led by advocates like Epaminondas Remoundakis and the Brotherhood of the Sick, life improved. Over 1,000 people passed through Spinalonga until the colony closed in 1957, and the island was finally abandoned in 1962.
Legacy and Tourism Today
Today, Spinalonga is a haunting yet beautiful reminder of endurance and transformation. Visitors can explore Venetian fortifications, Ottoman dwellings, and the remnants of the l***r colony—including “Dante’s Gate,” the tunnel once symbolizing despair but also survival. A permanent exhibition offers insight through historic photos, artifacts, and medical tools.
