A village built to survive ⚔️🏡
Perched on a hill in Mani, 𝐕𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐚 was developed between the 18th and 19th centuries during a time of intense clan rivalries and limited central authority. Families built tall stone tower houses (pyrgospita) not just as homes, but as defensive strongholds, complete with narrow windows, thick walls, and elevated entrances to withstand attacks.
These towers allowed entire families to live, store supplies, and defend themselves during long feuds that could last generations. Today, the village stands as a striking reminder of Mani’s fiercely independent past.
