I was born and bred in Ikaria, one of the most unique islands in Greece and Im more than happy to guide you around! With a Swiss mom and an Ikarian dad, I have mastered several languages such as Greek, Swiss, German, and English. I am punctual like a proper Swiss and dance and have fun like a true Greek!

January is over, the Christmas sparkle has faded, and so has my time for reviewing last year.. 🫠 But I’m finally getting to some of the things I’ve been meaning to share.
So many great things happened last year, and life was moving too fast for me to post about them at the time.

I’ll start with something that actually happened two years ago: an interview! 📝 The interview is unfortunately in Greek for non-Greek speakers—but there’s a transcription, and translation tools or AI can help 😉 by my beloved .nikol for the amazing Istorima.org project (more on slide 2). We talked about my academic background, how I became a licensed tourist guide, Ikaria’s rich history, panigyria festivals, longevity, and my perspective on tourism development on the island! Der Januar ist fertig, der Weihnachtszauber ist vorbei 😅 Endlich nehme ich mir Zeit, ein paar Dinge zu teilen, die mir schon länger am Herzen liegen.

Vor zwei Jahren hatte ich die große Ehre, für Istorima.org, ein wirklich großartiges Projekt, (slide 3) interviewt zu werden! 😊
Das Interview ist auf Griechisch, aber es gibt eine Transkription (Übersetzer oder KI können helfen 😉).

Wir haben über meinen Weg zur lizenzierten Fremdenführerin gesprochen, Ikarias reiche Geschichte, die Panigyria-Feste, die besondere Langlebigkeit der Inselbewohner und meine Gedanken zur Tourismusentwicklung auf Ikaria.

🍆🥒🌿 Soufiko — the traditional dish of Ikaria in one humble pot.

It may look a bit like briam, but Soufiko is something entirely Ikarian. Made with whatever the garden gives — eggplants, zucchini, green beans, peppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes — all chopped into big, rustic pieces. Slow-cooked in a pot with a little olive oil, letting the vegetables release their juices and do the work.

🧄🌿 This is the dish that generations of Ikarian home cooks made to use the season’s vegetables. Simple, nourishing, and full of the island’s aromas.

And the name? It comes from a playful story in the local dialect:

A woman, short on time and food, rushed to the garden and cooked whatever she could find. Her tired husband came home and asked:

— Mou ’fikes faï? (Did you leave me any food?)
— Sou ’fika (I left you some)
And just like that, the dish was named: Soufiko.

🍆🥒🌿 Soufiko – das traditionelle Gericht aus Ikaria in einem einfachen Topf.

Es sieht vielleicht aus wie Briam, ist aber etwas ganz Eigenes. Gekocht mit dem, was der Garten hergibt: Auberginen, Zucchini, Bohnen, Paprika, Zwiebeln, Knoblauch, Tomaten – grob geschnitten und langsam in Olivenöl geschmort, bis alles seinen vollen Geschmack entfaltet.

🧄🌿 Ein einfaches, nährendes Gericht, das Generationen von Ikariern mit dem Gemüse der Saison gekocht haben – voller Duft und Seele der Insel.

Und der Name? Der kommt aus einer kleinen Geschichte im Dialekt:
Eine Frau kochte spontan, was sie im Garten fand. Ihr müder Mann kam nach Hause und fragte:
— Mou ’fikes faï? (Hast du mir was übrig gelassen?)
— Sou ’fika (Ich hab dir was gelassen.)
So wurde das Gericht: Soufiko.

In Greece, Friday before Easter is a day filled with deep traditions and solemn rituals. Known as Good Friday, it’s a day of mourning, commemorating the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ. The atmosphere is somber, with many churches holding evening services, where the Epitaphios (a symbolic funeral procession of Christ) is carried around in a solemn march.

In my village, a beautiful tradition takes place: the young children and women decorate the Epitaphios with wildflowers, creating a vibrant and fragrant tribute to Christ. The streets come alive with processions at night, as people follow the decorated bier, holding candles and singing hymns.

The entire day is dedicated to reflection, prayer, and a deep connection with the spiritual significance of Easter. While the mood is reflective, there’s also a sense of community as families prepare for the upcoming Easter celebrations, with special foods being prepared and the anticipation of Sunday’s joy.

🇬🇷✨ In Griechenland ist der Freitag vor Ostern ein Tag voller tief verwurzelter Traditionen und feierlicher Rituale. Der Karfreitag ist ein Tag der Trauer, an dem die Passion und Kreuzigung Christi gedenkt wird. Die Atmosphäre ist ernst, viele Kirchen halten abendliche Gottesdienste ab, bei denen der Epitaphios (eine symbolische Beerdigungsprozession Christi) in einem feierlichen Zug getragen wird.

In meinem Dorf findet eine schöne Tradition statt: Die jungen Kinder und Frauen schmücken den Epitaphios mit wilden Blumen und schaffen so eine lebendige und duftende Hommage an Christus. Die Straßen erwachen nachts zum Leben, wenn die Menschen dem geschmückten Sarg folgen, Kerzen halten und Hymnen singen.

Der ganze Tag ist der Reflexion, dem Gebet und einer tiefen Verbindung mit der spirituellen Bedeutung von Ostern gewidmet. Während die Stimmung nachdenklich ist, gibt es auch ein starkes Gemeinschaftsgefühl, während sich die Familien auf die bevorstehenden Osterfeierlichkeiten vorbereiten, besondere Speisen zubereiten und sich auf die Freude des Ostersonntags freuen.

🚤🌿 In the third part, we see a boat and an olive branch, inspired by the famous words of Elytis: "If you disassemble Greece, in the end, you’ll find an olive tree, a vineyard, and a boat. Which means: with just these, you can rebuild it."

Elytis, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, honors Greece magnificently in his work, capturing the essence of the country. As a guide, I am deeply inspired by this, as it is my duty to represent the beauty and profound meanings of Greece. These symbols remind me of what it truly means to be Greek and to share this spirit with my visitors every day.

🚤🌿 Der letzte Teil meines Logos besteht aus einem Boot und einem Olivenzweig, inspiriert von den berühmten Worten von Elytis: „Wenn du Griechenland zerlegst, wirst du am Ende einen Olivenbaum, einen Weinberg und ein Schiff finden. Was bedeutet: Mit nur diesen kannst du es wieder aufbauen.“

Elytis, der den Nobelpreis für Literatur erhielt, ehrt Griechenland auf großartige Weise in seinem Werk und fängt das Wesen des Landes ein. Als Reiseführerin bin ich tief inspiriert davon, denn es ist meine Aufgabe, die Schönheit und die tiefen Bedeutungen Griechenlands zu repräsentieren. Diese Symbole erinnern mich daran, was es bedeutet, Griechin zu sein und diesen Geist jeden Tag mit meinen Besuchern zu teilen!

To me, this logo symbolizes Ikaria and its rich cultural heritage, a heritage I am deeply committed to protecting and sharing with respect to my visitors!

When I started my business, I wanted it to be personal and an expression of who I am. The logo you see on my page isn’t just random symbols; it’s a reflection of my story in the business world.

First, the moon 🌕—representing myself in this project. My name, Selina, comes from the Greek word for the ancient full moon goddess Selene. Then, the column and ancient vase represent my deep love for history and my secret passion for archaeology—symbols of my academic journey and what drives me every day!

It’s also a patiently crafted idea by , tolerating my scattered thoughts and bringing it all together. Couldn't be more thankful to her ❤️

Als ich mein Unternehmen gründete, wollte ich, dass es persönlich ist und eine Ausdrucksform dessen, wer ich bin. Das Logo, das du auf meiner Seite siehst, sind keine zufälligen Symbole; es ist ein Spiegelbild meiner Geschichte in der Geschäftswelt.

Zuerst der Mond 🌕 – er repräsentiert mich in diesem Projekt. Mein Name, Selina, stammt vom griechischen Wort für die antike Vollmondgöttin Selene. Dann repräsentieren die Säule und die antike Vase meine tiefe Liebe zur Geschichte und meine geheime Leidenschaft für Archäologie – Symbole meiner akademischen Reise und das, was mich jeden Tag antreibt!

On World Poetry Day! 📖✨
Greece not only has a rich literary tradition but also boasts two Nobel Prize-winning poets: Giorgos Seferis (1963) and Odysseas Elytis (1979). Elytis, in particular, has always been a great source of inspiration for me – his poetry captures the essence of Greece, its light, landscape, and the very soul of the country.
He once said:
"If you take Greece apart, only an olive tree, a grapevine, and a boat will remain. With these, you can rebuild Greece." 🌿🍇⛵
These words touched me deeply and even inspired my logo – a symbol of the indestructible connection between nature, history, and identity.
And honestly, how could anyone not write poetry in Greece? A land with endless blue skies, rugged mountains, and golden sunsets – poetry in its purest form. 💙✨

Zum Welttag der Poesie!
Griechenland hat nicht nur eine reiche literarische Tradition, sondern auch zwei Nobelpreisträger in der Dichtung: Giorgos Seferis (1963) und Odysseas Elytis (1979). Besonders Elytis hat mich immer inspiriert – seine Poesie fängt die Essenz Griechenlands ein, das Licht, die Landschaft und die Seele des Landes.
Er schrieb einmal:
"Wenn du Griechenland zerlegst, wirst du am Ende einen Olivenbaum, einen Weinstock und ein Boot finden. Mit diesen kannst du es wieder aufbauen." 🌿🍇⛵
Diese Worte haben mich so tief berührt, dass sie sogar mein Logo inspiriert haben – ein Symbol für die unzerstörbare Verbindung zwischen Natur, Geschichte und Identität.
Und mal ehrlich: Wie könnte man in Griechenland keine Poesie schreiben? Ein Land mit unendlichem Blau, schroffen Bergen und goldenen Sonnenuntergängen – Poesie in ihrer reinsten Form.

Five years ago, spring of 2020 the world was shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic—but the Ikarians had already experienced the devastating impact of a pandemic over a century earlier.

Hidden deep in the mountains of Ikaria lies Platedo, an abandoned village with a tragic past. In 1918, as the Spanish flu swept across the world, a returning villager unknowingly brought the virus home. Before symptoms even appeared, nearly the entire settlement had been infected.

Only two young men escaped the illness. They had been sent to Marathos, a nearby village, to fetch a doctor. But when they arrived, the locals, fearing the spread of the disease, forbade them from ever returning.

Platedo was left to its fate, and for a long time, no one dared to set foot there. Today, it remains a silent reminder of a past pandemic—one that echoes eerily with our own recent history.

Vor fünf Jahren erschütterte die COVID-19-Pandemie die Welt – doch die Ikarioten hatten die verheerenden Auswirkungen einer Pandemie schon über ein Jahrhundert zuvor erlebt.
Tief in den Bergen Ikarias liegt Platedo, ein verlassenes Dorf mit einer tragischen Vergangenheit. Im Jahr 1918, als die Spanische Grippe die Welt heimsuchte, brachte ein heimkehrender Dorfbewohner das Virus unwissentlich mit. Noch bevor die ersten Symptome auftraten, hatte sich die Krankheit bereits auf fast alle Bewohner ausgebreitet.
Nur zwei junge Männer blieben verschont. Sie waren nach Marathos, eine nahegelegene Ortschaft, geschickt worden, um einen Arzt zu holen. Doch als sie dort ankamen, untersagten die Einheimischen ihnen die Rückkehr – aus Angst, dass sich die Krankheit weiterverbreiten könnte.
Platedo wurde seinem Schicksal überlassen, und lange wagte niemand, das Dorf zu betreten. Bis heute steht es als stilles Mahnmal einer vergangenen Pandemie – mit einer Geschichte, die auf erschreckende Weise an unsere eigene jüngste Vergangenheit erinnert.

🎓 Becoming a Licensed Tourist Guide in Greece is no easy feat! Here’s what it takes:
➡️ Acceptance into one of the Ministry of Tourism’s guiding schools (only about 75 spots per year!).
➡️ At least two foreign languages at a C2 proficiency level.
➡️ 35 days of travel across Greece, practicing tours at key archaeological and cultural sites.
➡️ Passing exams in 20+ subjects!
➡️ A rigorous 2-year program covering:
📖 Ancient, medieval, and modern Greek history and archaeology
