Destruction of Naoussa was a bloody event of the Greek War of Independence in 1822.
After fierce battles around the city and the siege of Naoussa for 15 days by the Ottoman valie of Thessaloniki, followed the invasion of the Turkish army into the city, which caused the complete destruction of Naousa, as well as the massacre and captivity of the entire population.
Women of Naousa sacrificed themselves and their children falling into the river in order not be captured by the ottomans.
As the inscription on the monument site states:
Passerby, stand reverently in memory of the dead. In the abyss that opens before you, the women and children of Naoussa found a glorious and heroic death, for the freedom and independence of the Greek nation, on April 22, 1822.
