Around Naoussa and Mount Vermio, vineyards give way to wooded slopes, orchards and villages with stone-and-timber houses. In places like Arkochori, fruit growing, livestock farming and local food remain closely connected to village life.

Tip: Add Arkochori to your route and walk up to Agios Dimitrios Church for views across the village and surrounding mountains. Afterwards, seek out local cheeses and seasonal produce: this is a region known for its dairy products, apples, pears and grapes.

Hidden in the mountains of Achaia, Lake Tsivlou formed in 1913 when a landslide blocked the Krathis River. Today, its forested shores and views towards Mount Helmos make it a rewarding stop on a Peloponnese roadtrip.

Tip: Make time for a lakeside walk, then continue to Zarouchla, around 10km away, for lunch in the village. It’s an easy way to combine the lake with a taste of mountain life rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.

At Lyrarakis Winery, the family has helped revive rare Cretan varieties including Dafni, Plyto and Melissaki. Visiting means discovering flavours that might otherwise have disappeared, along with the people working to keep this part of the island’s agricultural heritage alive.

Ask to include Dafni in your tasting and look for its distinctive bay-leaf aroma. Its name means “laurel” in Greek, giving you a little clue before your first sip.

Near Filippiada in Epirus, the red hills of Kokkinopilos look nothing like the landscapes you might expect. Their colour comes from iron-rich clay, while erosion has shaped the slopes into folds and gullies against the surrounding greenery.

Tip: Take the approach near Agios Georgios, which involves roughly a 500-metre walk to the hills. Choose a dry day and wear shoes with good grip so you can explore on foot rather than stopping for a roadside photo.

In the mountains of Arcadia, Zerzova Taverna turns local produce into the kind of food that defines a place: home-raised meat, handmade cheese, wild greens, mushrooms, vegetables and recipes rooted in traditional Arcadian cooking.

Its story began in Panagia, also known as Zerzova, while today the taverna is located just outside the nearby village of Markou.

Tip: Come hungry and book ahead. Ask what’s cooking that day rather than sticking to a plan, much of what reaches the table is produced, grown or gathered by the owners themselves.

What would Facebook have looked like in ancient Greece? Probably something like this. At Delphi, the famous Polygonal Wall supporting the terrace of the Temple of Apollo is covered with more than 800 ancient inscriptions.

Long before timelines and status updates, people carved public notices, legal acts and official announcements into stone, where everyone could see them and where they would remain part of the public record.

Tip: When visiting Delphi, don’t walk past the Polygonal Wall too quickly. Get close and look for the inscriptions carved across its surface. You’re essentially reading one of antiquity’s most public “walls”.

There’s more to Naxos than beaches. Head inland and the island changes completely. Stone-built villages, shaded squares, old churches and mountain roads reveal a quieter, more traditional side of Naxos.

Tip: Make time for Filoti, one of Naxos’ best-known mountain villages, built on the slopes of Mount Zas. Wander through its narrow streets, stop beneath the plane trees in the main square, and stay for a coffee or a local meal before continuing your village-hopping route.

Just 22km from Chania, Seitan Limani is one of Crete’s most dramatic beaches: a narrow turquoise cove tucked between steep cliffs, reached after a short but fairly steep hike down.

Tip: Visit late in the afternoon, when the crowds begin to thin and the cove feels much calmer. Wear proper shoes for the 20-minute descent, bring water, and give yourself enough time for the climb back up before it gets dark.
