Loggerhead turtles swim over the ruins of Pavlopetri, the oldest underwater city in the world, on their way to build their nests on the beaches of Vatika Bay. Our interest in the ancient archeological site extends to the marine environment in which it is located — and the protection of the iconic species Caretta caretta. Help us help the local Greek environmental organization Toulipa Goulymi during this nesting season!
Sea Turtle Hatchling Fund
Again this year, the Greek environmental protection NGO Toulipa Goulymi is raising money to protect loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta, in Vatika Bay and the Myrtoon Sea. In 2018, this area was recognized by ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Agency of Greece, as a major nesting site for loggerhead turtles. This was based on years of record-keeping of turtles nests and hatchlings by Toulipa Goulymi.
Toulipa Goulymi receives no outside funding. All the work is done entirely by volunteers. We depend completely on donations to pay for gas for volunteers to drive their cars in order monitor all the beaches of the area and to pay for screens and cages to protect the turtle nests once they have been identified. We also have a fund to pay for emergency transportation of injured turtles to ARCHELON’s Turtle Rescue Center in Glyfada.
For the 2020 nesting season, which is well underway, we are trying to raise €2,500: €1,500 for gas; €500 for protective cages, corridors, and screens; and €500 for the emergency transportation fund.
